want a P90 in the neck of an HH Tele...thinking P-Rail might give me a two fer deal...but is as P90ish in P90 split as Phat Cat???

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

i think the stock prail sounds maybe more traditionally p90 like than the phat cat due to the a5 magnets. i love the phat cat but the a2 gives it a chewier character. you can always swap a5's in there but i like the a2, especially in the bridge.

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

I really like my tele with a hot tapped bridge and prails neck. I mag swapped the prails to have an A5 and A2 in there.

Prails is reversed so the rail is closer to the neck. Push pulls on volume and tone so I get:
Hard rock tele - vol and tone down - full bridge and series neck
p90 tele - vol down tone up - full bridge and p90 neck (use this most of the time)
Traditional tele - vol up tone down - tapped bridge and neck rail
"Paf" tele - vol up, tone up- tapped bridge and parallel neck

+1 prail, you might only find one additional sound that you like (parallel), but it is the better classic p90.

The P Rail's P90 coil sounds more like a P90 to me, but it isn't night and day to me. Plus you get some great bonus sounds (use with Triple Shots).

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

Wow, P-Rails seem to rule unconditionally!!!thanks to all for the thoughtful and crystal clear recommendations....so, anybody got a P-Rail neck for sale???

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

I also like the P-Rail (especially its P-90).
And with a triple shot you get four sounds out of a P-Rail.

Thank you Jeremy for the A5 Phat Cat idea !

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

What's holding a Phat Cat together? I've done mag swaps on a P-Rail, which just has a couple of screws through the base plate, and I'd assumed Phat Cats to be similar, but that doesn't look to be the case at quick glance.

Re: P-Rail or Phat cat?

I would also say P-Rails. I seem to be one of the few around here that LOVES that pickup in the humbucking position. Here is my Strat with the P-Rails in the bridge, Bill Lawrence L-250 and a Pearly Gates in the neck .
