P Rail Quack from Les Paul Style Guitar

I'm a guitar/synth player in a gigging variety band. I have a Godin Freeway SA, HSH Strat type guitar. I put P Rails with Triple Shots and an SSL-1 in it last year and I love it. I can get absolutely any tone from it. It's turned into my number one guitar.

The problem is that I also have a Godin LGXT Les Paul style guitar that no longer gets played because it's not as versatile. It's good, but I can't get Strat quack from it, so I don't play it. I'm wondering if I put P Rails with Triple Shots in it, will I get Strat quack from it in single coil mode when using both pickups? The pickups are approximately 3.5 inches apart. I get quack from my Freeway, but the coils are only 1.5 inches apart.

Anyone get P Rail quack from their Les Paul style guitar? If yes, how far apart are your rails?

Welcome to the forum!

While the P-Rails sound one way in your Freeway, they will sound a little different in your LGXT due to the construction differences, but not enough to not consider them. They are still a very versatile set, and are probably the closest you can get to having those diverse sounds. It is just that the construction of the guitar is different,. But that would be a factor in any pickup swap.

Part of the thing is the scale length. Gibson style guitars aren’t as snappy sounding due to the shorter scale length.

The key to quack is a bright sounding middle pickup. I get good quack on my guitar with a full size humbucker and two rail type single coil size humbucker.

Only I hate that quack sound so I never use it. Lol

Embrace the way a guitar sounds and try not to force it to sound like a different guitar. Or buy a Strat.

Thanks for the welcome Dave!

I've always thought the Godin LGXT was a Les Paul style guitar, but I've found it has a 25.5 inch scale and has a silver maple center with poplar wings just like my Freeway. So really, i think it's more like an HH Strat than a Les Paul -- with the possible exception of the mahogany neck.

I'm a Strat guy at heart, so the more Strat-like i can make the guitar, the happier I'll be. I'm really hoping i can get some quack from it.

Hi David,

I'm a guitar/ synth player, so my choices are very limited. I'm very happy with the Godins. I'm just trying to dial the LGXT in so that i can switch things up with the Freeway. My frets are wearing out too fast playing just one guitar.

I have PRails in my ES335 - so not a direct comparison, but close - the middle,rails-only tone is much closer to the Telecaster middle position - I wouldn’t describe it as near Strat quack.

As a fellow guitar/Synth player, I understand. We are pretty limited as to what guitars we can use.

I guess that makes sense Vince. I just tried my Epiphone Les Paul with split coils and there is no quack on that one either in single coil mode. I got the crazy idea that there would be because I read that the neck P Rail is RWRP. I thought SD did that to produce quack but it's probably just to reduce noise. Without quack, it probably doesn't make sense to take the resale hit by changing up the LGXT. But I might do it anyway just because I'm so addicted to the P Rails with Triple Shots.

Thanks for the help guys.
