Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

Hello and welcome to the forum.

There are numerous ways in which you could re-wire your instrument, depending upon how you would like it to operate.

The mode switching on the P-Rails pickup could be achieved with a DP3T on-on-on mini-switch or by push-pull pots. Push-pull pots will preserve the original appearance of the instrument. A mini-switch will require the drilling of a hole through the control plate.

One strong argument in favour of push-pull pots is the fact that the original pots in your guitar are unlikely to be of the highest quality.

Another option is to fit a 12-contact selector switch. This will fit neatly into the control cavity without modification. (Unlike the 24-contact mega-switch!) This switch can be configured to give several pickup combinations at the flick of the five-way selector.

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

If I'll choose the push-pull pots option I must change all the two pots or only one?
In my config (1 volume 1 tone 3 ways switch) to split the PU between P90 and humb How should I wire the pU?
Thanks

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

This depends upon exactly what options you want to be able to switch between. In most instances, you will need two push-pull pots to replace your original Volume and Tone controls.

One other option that would work is to replace the original bridge with a Strat-style fixed bridge and a Triple Shot humbucker mounting surround. The Triple Shot features two built-in micro switches. These would allow any permutation of the two P-Rails coils to be combined.

For fuller explanations, visit the Support section of the Seymour Duncan website. From the pull-down menu, select Wiring Schematics. Under the humbuckers heading, select P-Rails explanation.

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

The hyperlink that you included is for Hot Rail Telecaster wiring. Seymour Duncan categorises the P-Rails under Humbuckers.

Pot resistance value for P-Rails is an interesting question. The P90, being of Gibson origin, is associated with 500k pots. The rail coil, intended to mimic Fender sounds, might be expected to be matched with 250k pots.

One possible compromise solution is to use 300k pots. Gibson has certainly used these at various points in its history. The trouble would be finding 300k push-pull pots.

Just to confuse matters, it is possible that Seymour Duncan Pickups has designed the rail coil of the P-Rails pickup to sound "right" when wired to a 500k volume pot. Further reading required, I think.

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

I've bought a 500k volume pot , could you suggest me the right configuration ... I wonuld not be boring ... but I'm quite new with tele ... I used to work with standard wiring with Les Pauls...
Many thanks again ... I offer to you a virtual glass of red wine.

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

Could anyone please suggest me the right way to wire P rail with

1 volume
1 tone
3 way switch

1 500 kpot in volume.... ?

Many thanks

Re: P-Rail wiring for a simil Tele

I'm so sorry ... but all is still dark ...

I 'll put the P-rail humb. in bridge position and I have

1 volume
1 tone
3way switch (tele style)
1 P-rail (bridge)
1 single coil

My goal is splitting the P-rail between P90 and Full HB in bridge position

If I purchase 1 push -pull volume pot Do I have to change also tone from 250 to 500 ?

How should I wire all? and IS it possible?

or shoul I buy also a pot for tone?

Sorry but P rail schematic are not clear and problems are too many ...
