P-Rails + Duckbucker + Cool Rails

Hi all,

I’m a beginner at wiring in new pickups, I have an HSS strat clone which I’m redoing completely and I’m hoping I can get some input from you all before I go ahead and wire the following:

I have a P-rails with a triple shot, a duckbucker for middle, and a cool rails for the neck. Along with that, two 500k pots (with optional .22 caps) for volume and tone, and a 5 way switch.

I was thinking I wire them like the diagram below (aside from triple shot to 5 way switch). Is that reasonable? I was reading that the duckbucker and the cool rails might not play well together? Should I use the .22 caps on the pots or not and where? Will 500ks work well with that set up and if not, what should I be paying attention to?

I need to improvise with what I have above (can’t get new pots, etc). Any thoughts or input would be appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum!
It sounds like what you want would rock! I would use a 22 cap, and the 500k pots should be fine. The Duckbucker might have to be a little closer to the strings than the Cool Rails to balance, but should work just fine.

You'll be fine with a .22 cap and 500k pots. The cool rails should be fine with the duckbucker.

Thank you both!! Regarding the capacitors: a single .22 on the 500k tone pot, right?

I'll be wiring these tomorrow.

Thanks,

Yeah, you got it! Let us know how this project turns out!

Thanks, Mincer. Will do.

I am having trouble figuring out how to wire in the triple shot. I assume the black wire goes in the bridge position of the 5 way switch as in the diagram below [1]. What do you do with the white and ground? Do they both go on top of the volume pot? I'm looking at this [2] but it doesn't apply due to the switch. This is probably a noob question, so thanks in advance.

Re: P-Rails + Duckbucker + Cool Rails

Looking at that diagram, it might be that white goes to the 5-way switch actually.

Re: P-Rails + Duckbucker + Cool Rails

Alright, I wired everything according to the diagram [1]. Neck and middle sound excellent! The P-Rails sounds tinny and the switches on the triple shot don't seem to do anything. I go from the P-Rails to the triple shot as per this video [2] so I'm sure everything is good there. From the triple shot, white wire goes to the 5-way switch, and black and ground go on top of the volume pot with everything else. What am I doing wrong with the Triple shot? Help!

Re: P-Rails + Duckbucker + Cool Rails

To hear what it sounds like: https://clyp.it/fbmtimfd Neck then middle then Bridge last. ( I have one string on and haven't adjusted bridge saddles yet :) )

It sounds like the volume is way down on the P-rails/Triple shot and it's all trebble. Any ideas welcome...

Re: P-Rails + Duckbucker + Cool Rails

Hmm, can you post some clear pics of your wiring? You should certainly hear some drastic changes with the Triple Shot, so something isn't quite right. I am one (or many) of us here may be able to spot what is wrong.

Great. Here you go. Hope these are good. The wires I'm holding are the triple shot, the others would be the other two pickups.

I rewired eveything after the first try to make sure it wasn’t something dumb, but had the same exact problem. At this point wondering whether I need to do sth to get the p rails ready, whether i might have damaged the p rails, or the triple shot...

Edit: typos.
