P/U Mix & Match - Output??? (Antiquity II Surfer, SLS-1 Lipstick, TV Jones Classic)

Hey everyone. I have a HSS Stratocaster that could use some better pickups and I'm thinking of entering into the nebulous world of mix-and-match pickup sets. The problem is that I don't know whether the outputs are comparable. I was curious if anyone has had any experience pairing up any of the pickups I'm considering. Here's what I want to try:

NECK: Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Surfer
MIDDLE: Undecided (probably either Antiquity II or SLS-1 Lipstick For Strat)
BRIDGE: TV Jones Classic

Any feedback regarding the output level or tonal blending of this pickup configuration is appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

The levels from a Surfer, Surfer, TV Jones trio should match pretty nicely. The problem is choosing a value for the volume pot. The Surfers would usually be matched with a 250k pot. The TVJ would normally have a 500k pot.

Since the TVJ pickup is likely to sound bright and twangy, you may find the bridge and centre pairing a bit gnarly.

Hmm. I had not considered that the volume pot would even be an issue. Any recommendations on how to deal with it? What kind of problems would be caused by using the wrong pot?

How so? Do you mean that in a negative way?

Also, thanks so much for responding. You've given me more to consider.

I like gnarly. (Roy Buchanan, Richard Thompson) Not everybody does.

Exactly how the TVJ Filter'Tron clone pickup will sound depends, in part, on the mounting type.

I have to figure that you've never actually played a FilterTron-type pickup, because "bright and twangy" are definitely not how I would describe the TV Classic or the Gretsch pickup it's based on. Perhaps you have it confused with a DeArmond (the other standard Gretsch pickup).

A TV Classic would probably be a bit hotter than your neck or middle, but not too far off. It is a big-sounding pickup with a lot of character.

Well. If I wasn't already sold on the idea, the Richard Thompson reference did it.

How exactly does the mount affect tone?

Solder a 500k resistor between the ground and the hot point of your single coils (from the selector). It's easy to do then to undo if necessary and it will reduce the load to 250k with a 500k volume pot. If the sound is too bright when the single coils are in parallel, add TWO resistors, one per single coil.

You could wire it with two volume pots, one 250k for the singles and one 500 k for the TVJ,then one master tone control. That should tame the brightness BUT as FF Pointed out the TVJ is a bit bright so a 250k pot could tame that a bit
