P90 Humbuckers?

So as usual I'm having ideas. A P90 is basically just a single coil pickup right? Has anyone ever put two of them together to form a P90 Humbucker? Thinking about trying this in a Strat. Basically have 4 P90s but paired together for hum canceling. Thoughts? Do I need my guitar ownership rights taken away?

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

a p90 IS a single coil pup, just with different construction than a strat or tele. you could do it, probably be very thick sounding with lots of output, maybe muddy. since a p90 uses two magnets you could build a three magnet two coil pup ns|sn|ns where | is a coil and n & s are the poles of the magnet. might be sweet in the bridge, probably not so great in the neck. the original p90 had 10k winds, when they did the first humbuckers they split that between two coils giving each 5k turns.

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

Seymour Duncan and Lindy Fralin both offer stacked P-90 humbuckers.... I have both, and while they have sonic differences, they are quiet and good sounding units.

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

i wasnt thinking stack, i was thinking side by side humbucker with p90 coils. if you are just trying to get humcancelling then there are companies, like seymour duncan, that make those. im looking forward to when duncan makes a p90 stack+

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

I'm not sure if understand what "stacked" means. I was talking about taking 2 P90s and creating one giant humbucker.

MY BAD! I misunderstood what you were getting it. My answer: No one that I know of offers such a pickup, but it could be done. What I would do is order a pair of P-90's from Duncan (or whoever), and have them wound for low output, and one pickup wound in reverse. Then using a series/ parallel switch or wiring you could have a pair of side by side P-90's wired as a single humbucker. It would be high output, but probably lack a high fidelity sound.

And a stacked humbucker is a pickup with 2 coils, one stacked on top of the other, and wound in the opposite direction thus making the unit a humbucker. Duncan makes several stacked single coils, think Bill Lawrence L-250's....

Some of the early PRS "Sorcerer's Apprentice" guitars had P90 pairs at the bridge wired like a giant humbucker.

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

thats the type of beast i was walking about in post #2! never seen one before

They have for quite sometime. SEE ABOVE. ^^^^^

they make a p90 stack. i want a stack made like the new stack plus pups. the p90 stack is ok but it doesnt sound like a p90 to me, much like the old classic stack and hot stack didnt sound like fender single coils to me. the new classic stack+models sound much more like fender single coils.

Would sure like to hear what that sounded like!

I've tried something along those lines with 3 A2s in a Slash bridge. From what I can tell, it flattened and compressed the lower end a fair bit, but was still very useable. Depending on taste, of course :)

Re: P90 Humbuckers?

I would think if those coils are wired in series, it would be pretty thick. Good for semi-clean chords and not a whole lot else. If each P90 coil wasn't wound as much as a regular P90, I could see it working, though.
