Hey. Recently got a les paul special with 2 p90s. Just noticed tonight the hum is much more present on the treble pup. Is that normal?

I also have a LP Special p90. Afair....they both hum about the same on either pickup. I’ll check it out tomorrow again and let you know.
FWIW, I have aftermarket pickups in mine.

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

It’s weird, neck pickup hardly makes any noise... the second i switch to the bridge, all kinds of noise. I decided to try my lp junior through the same rig and it’s pup makes about as much noise as the bridge of the special.

I wonder if my new case damaged the switch or something. I didn’t notice it last night. Blah, bringing it to my tech to have the frets leveled next week, will have my tech look at it. Blah, whats some more money down the tubes? :-/

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Are you sure you're getting the neck pickup by itself, and not both pickups in the middle and neck position?

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Is it possible that the overall volume of the pickups isn't completely equal? If the bridge pickup is generally louder, you could expect more hum.

It could also be that the way you've set your amp accentuates the hum in the (presumably) brighter bridge position; you could roll off the tone and see if it affects the hum, perhaps.

That’s very possible. The bridge pup is def higher, would that typically cause more or less noise?

My bridge p90 is higher too. The neck pickup would overpower it if it weren’t.
I’m not convinced that the height is causing MORE noise but it may be making the already present noise more audible.

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Pretty sure something is wrong, then. Gonna bring it to my guy to have the frets leveled on tuesday, hopefully he’ll tell me if something is wrong and fix it without completely breaking my bank... we shall see

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Other thing is—- when switched to the middle (both pups), the noise doesn’t cancel

The only thing that makes me think something may not be wrong is how my les paul junior is also pretty noisy

Ok...we need to check the wiring.
Mine are hum cancelling in he middle....hang on a min. I’m going to get my guitar and snap a pic for you.

the last pic is just to show the height difference with the pickups.

Your wiring is a MESS. It looks like the output lugs of your switch are shunted to the ground lug! And your tone pot looks like it is wired incorrectly.
This is how your switch and pots should be wired, but with P-90s instead of the humbuckers (just ignore the red and white wires and you're set):

Are you referring to my wiring (in the pics). If so, I’ll have to go back and trace the wiring...my pics are sort of cut off.
However, the guitar works and sounds great as is.
The leads from the pickups were left long simply because I had never installed pickups with the outer shielding and wasn’t sure about how to best shorten them, so I just left them long.
But the base wiring was done by my local shop. I only installed the pickups.

Edit:
You know way more about this than I do, so by all means....I’m open to learning whatever you can teach me here...
