Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Does your wiring look like the diagram I posted?

I see several major differences.

1) tone pot outer lug (left in diagram) looks to be grounded to the volume pot.
2) coil pot outer lug (also left in diagram) looks to be grounded to the back of the vol pot as well as having the capacitor attached to it and running to tone pot center lug.
3) bridge is grounded to vol pot and not tone pot (shouldn’t make a difference?)
4) there is a cloth covered wire on the toggle switch running from ground lug to the center terminal.

I’m confused...the wiring is very different from the diagram yet seems to function properly...
I know that there can often be multiple ways to wire something but this seems really different!

I should add that this guitar originally had the Gibson pcb board installed. I can’t remember if the switch was changed out. I don’t think it was. Would that switch wiring be a part of how it would have been wired from the factory?

No. No switch in any guitar, in any time in history, ever has the output lug of the switch grounded.
This wiring really has some issues. The fact that it works in spite of this issue indicates there are some other very big problems here.

You should take it all apart and rewire it according to the diagram.

Yeah, personally I’d just scrap that & star over but that’s just my opinion. I mean do you just want a new harness?

I’ve got tons of 300K Gibson pots, switchcraft 3 way toggles, & Orange drop capacitors laying around my house. If you’d like I’ll build you a proper harness that you can just drop in & hook up your pickups, ground wire, Etc. so basically what you’d spend $50-$70 for on eBay..

I’m happy to build & ship it too you as long as you reimburse me for the shipping cost which I’d imagine would be less than $10. P.M. me if it’s something you’d be interested in....

Re: P90 hums more on treble pup

Mystery solved: turns out someone replaced the original pickups and the neck is a p90 sized bucker (i bought it used). That explains the lack of noise in the neck. Does anyone know of a way i can determine what the pups are exactly?

I assuming the current pups were some sort of upgrade but i’m not sure. Are there many cheap p90 shaped humbuckers? Or is it safe to say someone put money into “upgrading” it?

The guitar sounds great

I’m gonna close this thread because the topic has switched to a subject for the “pickup” section of this forum. Thanks everyone for your help!
