P90 sized Humbuckers

I'm looking into getting a dual p90 axe and I've been thinking about possibly putting in something a little more modern. I know that SD has a p90 Stack and the p90 Custom (which I'm liking), but Dimarzio has the p90 size versions of the Tone Zone and the Super Distortion. Anyone have experience with these or other buckers in a p90 shell?

Re: P90 sized Humbuckers

If you really are thinking about p90 guitars, why then immediately swap out the most distinctive feature??

You might as well just get a dual humbucker guitar

Re: P90 sized Humbuckers

Agree with the comment above in that OP may want to clarify if he/she is seeking noiseless P90s (i.e., still voiced like P90s) vs. humbuckers in the shape of P90 soapbars and dogears.

EDITED TO ADD: The Duncan Custom P90 is a true single-coil (still has hum) P90. It is a very good pickup, but it is not a humbucker. The only production noiseless Duncan P90s are the stacks. Humbuckers in the shape of P90s would have to be ordered through the SD Custom Shop.

I put gfs mean 90's in my LP. P 90s in a humbucker case, they sound surprising ly good, p90'ish anyway. Not sure that's what the OP had in mind but ,, hth , anyway,,

I just like versatility. And I've seen a few hum/p90 guitars like the G&L Fallout. Was thinking over options. Casting the net to see what the forum's thoughts were. I love a p90 neck and the bridge is cool too.

Re: P90 sized Humbuckers

I'd replace one with a mini humbucker if that would fit. A P90/Mini HB would give you a lot of awesome tones in that axe.

Re: P90 sized Humbuckers

I have the DiMarzio P90 sized Super Distortion as bridge pickup in an LP Special. It's fairly hot, not too noisy, quite bright and somewhat thin sounding. Not really very much like the ballsy full sized Super D humbucker, as I remember it- it's been awhile since I used a real one. If you're thinking about going this route, the Tone Zone version might be fatter and less harsh.

I really do like the combination of a (full sized) humbucker at the bridge with a P90 at the neck. But this little one isn't ideal for that. I intend someday to replace it with a quality conventional P90. Or maybe a warm sounding mini hum, if there is such a thing. That CustomShop humbucker-under-mini-cover looks intriguing. But I kinda have my heart set on a Super Vee as my next CustomShop order.
