PAF 58,59,And 60 Pickup Magnets?

Other than the earliest magnets being a bit wider than the later ones according to the book "Beauty Of The Burst",is it quite possible that one of these LPs could have had an A2 bridge pickup and an A3,A4.or A5 in the neck or vice versa?

Also do you guys feel like Bachtorock does with the mindset that some of these pickups or most of them had mis-matched coils?

Interesting topic and your thoughts?

Yeah I think they were mismatched. Seth Lover was known to say that the PAF's were wound "until they were full", which means they didn't measure them.So the coils were mismatched at least some of the time. I also agree that a variety of magnets were used. Sounds to me like they used whatever they had laying around.

With all of the great pickups there were, there were some dogs too. That suggests to me that the pickups were very inconsistent.

Agreed. I have a feeling that some of those famous LP's had mismatched coil 'buckers and were also running different mags in each.

They used all 4 Alnico Bros. pretty much interchangeably depending on what was available and cheapest at the time, etc. So it's possible you could have ended up with an LP or 335, etc., with an 8.5 Alnico 5 in the neck and a 7.6 alnico 2 in the bridge.

Re: PAF 58,59,And 60 Pickup Magnets?

the mismatched coils seem far too likely. when youre just grabbing bobbins and throwing wire on them you arent going to get perfectly matched coils very often.

like zhang said, they used whatever magnets were the most available and cheapest to get so it makes sense that there would be some mixing. in general i think the mismatching of the coils was more common than having a guitar with two different magnets. mismatching happened at a certain rate all the time, while the magnets would just have a transition period when a new batch or different supplier would mix with the previous one

Re: PAF 58,59,And 60 Pickup Magnets?

I think, just as with vintage Marshalls they used whatever was available and probably from the lowest cost supplier so there is no really telling what exactly was used on a consistant basis.

That's my understanding as well. Original PAFs were inconsistent. Some are great, some are junk, but none are cheap. :smack:

Seymour wrote a good articel for VG mag a few years ago about PAF's, saying that A2, 3, 4, and 5 were found in early PAF's. As for the mis matching of coils...they were all different and Im sure that it was more common to find 2 coils thet were mis matched a little than to find 2 coils that were perfectly matched...that said Im pretty sure none of them were wound with different guage wire on each coil and Im pretty sire that the differences were not as wide as the mis match in a "Hybrid'.

I'm just kidding too. I saw that line in a movie once -- an American in England says this to a snotty, very unhelpful Brit librarian. Although the line was actually "You're our favorite colony."
