PAF in a FIltertron Housing

Does Seymour make this or can it be made as a custom shop item? I'm thinking something like Seths crammed into a 'tron. :)

Re: PAF in a FIltertron Housing

Anything is theoretically possible. But if the bobbins are different sized than PAF bobbins then getting it to sound precisely the same in all aspects might be hard to impossible in practice.

If you just want a Filter'Tron-style cover, that should be fairly easy. If you want something that sounds like a humbucker, while fitting in actual Filter'Tron dimensions, there'll be some compromises. It's more likely to sound closer to a Deluxe-style mini-humbucker than a full PAF. Not necessarily bad, but a little different.

For the latter, TV Jones' Power'Tron [PAF] or Power'Tron Plus [overwound PAF to Billy Gibbons' taste], if you want something off-the-shelf.

Or for cheap humbucker-sized but 'tron-styled options, might look at GFS Retrotron series. No experience with them.

Seymour Duncan's Custom Shop has done Filter'Trons and 'tron covers, and for that matter, I've seen open-front shield covers a number of guitar parts places.

It doesn't have to be an exact replica, just PAF'ish. I have tried the TV Jones stuff and I am actually thinking of a set of Supertrons but I just thought I would check out Seymour before I plunk down $300. I had a Jet with Powertrons once and it sounded cool but now exactly what I am after.
Thanks -Frank

I can't imagine that you would be the first person to request this, and it sounds like it might be easy enough. Ask for yourself, and let us know what they say.

The Super'Trons are not PAFish at all, so I'm a bit puzzled. Power'Tron Plus, Power'Tron, or Classic Plus are probably the most PAF-like of his pickups, in order of descending output. Super'Tron is a classic Filter'Tron with thick steel blades instead of screws. Higher inductance, so higher output and more midrange, but also broad frequency response.

I guess the question is what was off about the Power'Tron? Too hot, not hot enough, not bright enough, not warm enough? Or was it more the attack/bite? Dual screws tend to emphasize attack and bite a bit and blades may or may not move it in the right direction, but I haven't really heard Super'Trons as particulary vintage humbucker in tone. There pick attack is just so different to my ear.

Not saying you are wrong to want Super'Trons, even over more PAF-like models, just I don't understand it, given the PAFish descriptor.
