PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

I always thought I was a Marshall or 'Brit-voiced' amp guy but after getting the e-mail from Heart's Roger Fisher it occurred to me that many of my favorite tones are from from LP's or other Gibsond through Fender amps such as Roger's LP through Twin Reverb, Neil Young And Crazy Horse, early Ted Nugent and others I'm probably not even aware of.

Can you guys name me some other classic rockers who used Fenders and also:

What is the difference between a Deluxe Reverb and a Twin Reverb?
Which amp do they refer to as a Blackface or is Blackface the name
Other useful Fender info

Thanks.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

"Blackface" refers to the cosmetics of the control panel on fender amps made roughly from 65ish to 68ish if memory serves depending on the model.

In general terms cut a twin in half and you have a deluxe. Its not that simple of course as they use different power tubes etc but that is the general idea.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

One guy with great LP/Fender tone was Mike Bloomfield, who used a Twin Reverb a lot. Peter Green used Fender amps (among others) in Fleetwood Mac, too.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

Dave Gilmour recorded the Another Brick in the Wall solo using an LP with p90s into a D/I box. Which I think was later fed through a Fender. I always loved that tone he got on that solo.

Also, Mark Knopfler used an LP with P90s on Brothers In Arms, sounds like a Fender to me. Another song with great guitar tone.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

it's not classic but mike ness uses gibbo into bassman

IMO one of the best lead tones ever

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

Neal Schon played LP's through a Twin in the mid-90's during the Abraxis project. That same twin was also fed to two Marshall 4x12's and the front end slammed with a Boss Blues Driver. Talk about killer tone. And I was standing center stage, practically on it, watching the whole thing, and getting my face peeled off during his solo spot. :D

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

Ted Nugent - Fender Twins and Gibson Byrdlands
Joe Walsh - Les Pauls and all kinds of Fender amps.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

I thought of Joe Walsh, too. Also:

Santana before Boogie - I think he was playing his SG through a Bandmaster stack at Woodstock. Was that HB's or P-90's though?

Here's a weird one - Neil Geraldo recorded the first Benatar album (from whence came 'Heartbreaker') through four Twins, set up in the corners of the room and cranked. Must have been louder than ****. After that, he switched to JCM800 combos.

I don't know how I remember this stuff.

How can you forget Billy G.....even though a lot of stuff early on was played through a 100 watt Super Lead, there's a buttload of stuff recorded with Tweed Deluxes and who knows what else.

Keith Richards uses exclusively Fender Twins. He also uses a Black Gibson 355 that is a killer guitar.

A Deluxe Reverb is 22 watts and has 1 12" speaker. A very good if not the best "small club" Amp. It lacks headroom due to its low wattage.

A Twin is a 80 watt 2 12" speaker amp. The best Loud and clean amp ever made. If loud and clean is what you want this is it. You can play at ear shattering volume and still maintain a very clean sound. B.B. King used twins as well as other amps. A very powerful amp.

BlackFace is an era of Fender Amps. I am not 100% sure but I think around 1962 or 63 Fender changed the Amp face from Brown to a Black face. There were also some circuit changes and these Amps like Super Reverbs, Dleuxe Reverbs Vibrolux , vibroverbs, and Twins became very desireable amps to have because of there very warm tones they produce. Fender maintained the Blackface look until sometime in 1967 they switched to a Silverface amp. The early silvers are exactly the same circuit as the blackface (up to about 68) but can be had for less money so a 67 or 68 silverface IMO is one of the best vintage Fenders to have. They are hundereds of $ less than a blackface, but they are basically the same amp except they have a silver plate. If you look into buying one of the silvers stay away from the Master volume style. They don't sound as good as non master silvers do, but are still better than some new amps.Blackface Fenders arguably are the most desireable Fenders... some people prefer the Tweeds which go back the the 50's. I personally prefer the Blacks and early silvers. This era offers the best reverb of just about everything I have encountered.

Take a closer look at the video.... I think you will see him playing thru a SS Acoustic. Great tone though:fingersx:

Go here for Fender info. I have been using this site for years depending on what I have been looking for.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

Ted Nugent has pretty much always used Super Twins, which are at least 120 watts hooked into huge Dual Showman cabs(2x15) He says that he only mikes one stack at a time and uses the rest for ridiculous stage volume. I read that is is so loud, tht during the Damn Yankees days, it used to kinda drive Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw to the opposite side of the stage......but then again, we already knew that Ted is kinda off a bit......in a good way though:laugh2: Gerald Weber once proclaimed that his ultimate "desert isle" amp would be a blackface Deluxe Reverb. For a good example of Twin tone, pick up the Fleetwood Mac in Chicago Cd. For the best example of what a STOLEN Twin sounds like, check out Sex Pistols:chairfall

For the last 10 years or so Ted has been using 5150 amps live. I've seen him twice in big arenas within the last 10 years and that's what he used.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

last time i saw him headlining was 93 or 94 I guess.......he was still using the Fenders but was using that zebra PRS a lot. It just didn't sound like Ted until he busted out the Byrdland for the old stuff. Same with Rush......Totally different vibe when Lifeson put down the PRS and picked up the Les Paul for 2112. considerably louder and fuller sound for starters.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

The last time I saw him was in 2000 on the KISS tour. He had a small wall of 5150's going and he played the Gibby all night, complete with racoon tail. :D Freakin' incredible tone. That dude can wail. One of the most underrated players IMO.

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

Alot of great info guys, thanks. Do you think a Blues Deluxe, Blues Jr. or Hot Rod Deluxe can get into some of that early Santana, Nuge Stranglehold, Heart Magic Man sweet, singing lead tone area or do I need to go into the higher end stuff?

Re: PAF's through Fender amps=tone heaven?

OK OK WILL PEOPLE STOP RANDOMLY CONJECTURING WHAT GILMOUR USES. I say this because a lot of impressionable kids on here have been buying pickups and pedals, even amps, trying to get his tone. He uses a TON of post prod. The Another Brick sound was a re-mic-ing of the guitar solo already laid down. Then they added post EQ, TONS of compression, etc. So you can almost never get that tone without a lot of tricks or gimmicks (pedals, etc) Gilmour himself doesn't really try to recreate it live.

A lot of people used this trick incl Guess Who for American Woman.

Thank you also to whomever added the Nugent used many Dual Showman as well.

Fenders and Twins, Deluxes in particular - are GREAT amps. I also love the new Bassman LTD.
