Painting Guitars

I have a Yamaha Pacifica, which i intend to strip and make into something new (new p/us etc). Id like to paint it another colour, but what kind of paint do I need to use? Can I just paint on top of the body as it is (natural varnished finish)? Thanks for any help!

Most finished wood furniture/guitars has to be stripped to bare wood to get a good result. Check out Project Guitar Tutorials for info on stripping and then finishing.
