does it matter what kinda paint you use to paint guitars? i'm getting a tele kit sometime in the near future & have a paint job i want in mind, my first instinct was just to use spraypaint, but then i remembered all you guys talking about how little things can affect tone, so i figured i'd check & see what the best option is

keep in mind, its gonna be ugly, but i still want a good sound from it

yup, but I have done spray paint finishes that sounded pretty good. As long as you dont completely smother the guitar in it.

I redid the finish on an SG of mine about 15 years ago. It turned out really well, but for the wrong reasons. It was a rather bright guitar beforehand and the combined paint/lacquer refinish made it darker sounding. Now, for what I was going to do with it, it didn't matter, and it ended up giving it some very nice tonal characteristics, but I wouldn't go the same route again. When I built my "Tracto-caster" a few months ago (John Deere themed Strat), we used enamel paint, and it worked quite well, but like beandip said, there's a great address to find out stuff about that. well for a hot rail tele meant to be good under lots of distortion & thrown around i think darker sounding isn't a problem

Yeah but there's a difference between a trash guitar, and a crap guitar. Too much spraypaint used wrongly will result in a crap guitar. Paint the guitar how you normally would, just using spraypaint, unless you dont care whether you dampen the resonence.

I used car spray paints from Halfords, turned out ok.
