Pair of governors, or gov+swamp thang?

I've grown weary of having 2 texas heats without something grittier combined with them.

So i sold 1 of them and put the other one in its own cab, since i do like the sound for some things.

I REALLY like the demos of the governor because of its edginess without being harsh like a V30 or most other british speakers I've heard. I've considered pairing a governor with a swamp thang, but I'm not sure how a 150w would mesh with a 75w.

Thoughts?

Watts won't matter since their efficiency ratings are close. Should be a good mix.

My 2x12 has a pair of governors in it and I love it. Let us know how the pairing goes, I've been curious of this one but never did anything about it. Just note that the watts pairing will matter in the maximum wattage the amp will tolerate.

I only have the Swamp Thang and pair it with a Wizard, though now I am using dual Wizards live. The ST has a VERY high threshold before breakup, so keep that in mind; it will retain clarity unless you absolutely PUMMEL it with SPLs. It has a lot of all frequencies; it is very 'hifi' sounding and almost sounds more like a monitor speaker than a guitar speaker. So, even though it is a touch less sensitive than the Wizard, it cuts through just fine.

The Hi-Fi vibe is why I'm switching out the Heats in the first place, but the Swamper sounds less so, in the demos at least.

Maybe I'll just build another 212 cab for the texas heat + a swamp thang, just do dual govs in the old 212 cab, and stick a greenback in the 112 cab.

Swamp Thangs are most commonly paired with Texas Heats, and that's what I have in my Avatar Vintage 4x12. This paring will give you plenty of low end and plenty of mids, and overall has a crisp, tight, and robust sound.

I also have a pair of Governors and Man O' Wars in my Splawn 4x12. This combo is similar to the Swamp Thang/Texas Heat combo, except that it's warmer and looser sounding.

I haven't tried the Swamp Thang/Governor pairing, but I do know that all four speaker types together at the same time sound spectacular!

How does the Wizard work for modern-ish "Brit" heavier sounds for you? I imagine you use them in a closed back cab?
I really love my Wizard and well, every upgrade route brings Vintage 30s but I'm really thinking of buyijng an empty 2x12 cab and buying an extra Wizard.
I'm so used to their presence, grit and response, and I don't like fixing what's not broke.

Plus, everyone uses V30s. ;)

Very, very well.

When you start adding Wizards, they get like a sledgehammer; just, so heavy. It's great. :)

Same here, but I haven't used V30s in years.

Plus, everyone uses V30s. ;)
Seems that way!

I run Wizards in an Egnater Rebel 112 and also in an Earcandy Buzzbomb ported 212; they're based on the Celestion G12H30 which in turn was the inspiration for the V30. I also have a 1978 Marshall straight 412 loaded with original blackback H30s. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "modern", but I'm able to do a convincing Megadeth or Alice in Chains tone with any of those cabinets. They actually sound quite similar except for volume, and I haven't used the 412 much in the last decade because the 212 sounds just as good and weighs just over half as much. I usually use these with my Marshall Jubilee, but I also occasionally run an Egnater Tweaker & Marshall Lead 12 through them.

Re: Pair of governors, or gov+swamp thang?

Thank you guys!

If it can do a good Megadeth/AIC impression, then it can do what I'm after for sure.

Re: Pair of governors, or gov+swamp thang?

I think you will have to adjust the mids to taste, but it definitely will crunch and compress most pleasingly. :)

Re: Pair of governors, or gov+swamp thang?

Wizards I think do get a bit too mid-happy if not careful.
My EQ usually looks like 6/4/6 or 7/3/7 and you wouldn't call my tone scooped by a long shot.
