Palm Muting Question

OK, say you are playing a full step bend, then you hold that bend, and as you slowly release it you play stacato (think Angus Young this is a very common classic rock lick) notes.
Question is; how do you produce the stacato? Because I've been kind of "digging in" to kill the note; I guess with the tip of my index finger and I don't think thats the right way.
This technique is used in other situations. Like killing a bend before you release it.
Any tips would be welcome

Re: Palm Muting Question

I haven't got a guitar with me at the moment so i cant 100% confirm, but i think i tend to up pick the note so that my index finger naturally hits the string after the note has sounded.

Similar to what Frantic Rock said.

I tried out my theory and that is not right, i use the outside part of my thumb to mute the string as i up pick.
