Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

I wanna know what this brother is running through. I know all about him, He won P Diddy's musician contest. He's been playing since he was 10. Damn, what a great bass tone.

and yeah, I know all about the voice boxes goin on and stuff. I just love the sweet super deep tone this guy is getting with his compression. It reminds me of the old Trace Elliots from the late 80s.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

and yes, they totally admit to ripping off the the old Minneappolis sound.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Wikipedia says that Marcus Miller played on the studio track, but I don't know who the SNL guy is.

Marcus still has his SWR rack preamp, and the '75 Jazz Bass with the built-in Sadowsky preamp.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Looks like a Peavey headstock, maybe?
It does resemble the original Peaveys, but it's a fiver (4 in-line/1 offset opposite side).

AFAIK, Peavey didn't do a fiver in the T series, and their pickups were series/parallel humbuckers.

Jolly's comment about the "P Diddy musician contest" set off my radar...

Walter Barnes Jr. was the contestant on "Making His Band", and he's gigged with Brian McKnight, Lalah Hathaway (Donny's daughter), Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton...

Long story short, this guy's legit. Absolutely no joke on bass. A TC Electronics endorsee.

However, Walter is a lefty.

I think the backing vocals were lip synced. There's certain times where the microphones are nowhere near their mouths and yet they can still be heard.

Bruno Mars is a surprisingly gifted performer, though. Last year's Super Bowl Half-Time Show proved that to me.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Hell yeah that bass tone is sick! I could be biased since I grew up on the Minneapolis sound but I love it.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Prefers Precisions, and that's definitely a J of some flavor on stage... which means all of nothing.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Thanks, David for that link. It's no wonder why he's getting so much bottom end on that video I posted. I guess this is the amp he uses. It's got plenty of bottom end with the bass set flat at 12 o'clock.

He could very well be using that 5 string just because of the neck. Just because he's a P guy doesn't mean he couldn't change it up for some reason or another. And if he does prefer pbasses it's not outside the realm of possibility that he's simply using a 5 string jazz because the 4 string necks aren't substantial enough.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

Jamereo Artis might be onstage here, but as we've seen over the years on SNL, they tend to do less actual playing and more lip-sync, especially with pop stars like Bruno Mars.
Lots of choreography makes singing on-key difficult. Not a hair out of place here... it sounds exactly like the track, note for note.

My money's on Marcus on the studio track. The sound is consistent with a slapped J with some hot-rod pickups and a fat preamp.

Re: Pardon The Language, But God Dayem!!!!!! That bass

I'm pretty impressed by Bruno's showmanship. That being said, he definitely has some great musicians behind him to make it all possible.

Didn't you link the Wikipedia page that said he was the bass player for the studio version?
