passive equivalent of EMG85?

Re: passive equivalent of EMG85?

Again, not relly a passive out there quite the same. I have used the 85 in a couple guitars, both in the bridge and neck. IMO it's a MUCH better bridge pickup than a neck because its so ht (hotter than the 81) and fat. But if I had to choose a Duncan that was closest, I'd say the CC because of the pronounced lower mids, thick creaminess, higher output, and tradtitional voicing.

I'm sorry, but this has been discussed at length.

There is NO pickup besides the 85 that will sound like it. Just put an 85 in!

Re: passive equivalent of EMG85?

The 85 rules as a bridge pup... with either a 60 or 81 in the neck, of course!

Re: passive equivalent of EMG85?

I would guess that it's almost impossible for a pickup with THAT much bass, and that much mids, to still have THAT much clarity.

It's just a weird pickup, to have that much "ooomph", yet still sound as clear as a vintage PAF.

You might have to go Hybrid to retain that much clarity, with the notes cleanly bouncing-off of each other while nailing chords. Maybe like a coil from a Tone Zone and a coil from a '59.

I dunno.......I'm useless here, I guess.....

Re: passive equivalent of EMG85?

The CC definately does not sound like a 85........is has half the bass frequencies of the 85, much more dense mids and different treble. Everybody seem to agree that the Custom is nearer to the 85.

Not entirely correct, DSS. My BK Miracle Man was voiced to have the same relative tone as the EMG85 pickup and it's passive. The BK Warpig meets or exceeds the output of an EMG as well.
