Pat Travers sound

there was a thread a long time ago and in it someone posted the Pedals Pat Travers used on stage a fair bit... i can't find the thread... any Pat Travers fans care to share his Effects and amps from the 80's...

I've been listening to the 1984 King Biscuit live cd a lot.... his and the other guitarists solo sounds on Rocker is amazing.... singing leads cascading into feedback... I Believe that part of that solo sound is some sort of MXR FX....

also makes me wonder if he or the other guy is using a tremolo pedal for the opening riff of I La La La Love You? Or is it a volume pedal or volume knob swell....?

Re: Pat Travers sound

Sorry, can't help with the pedals. I seem to remember LPs, Double-cuts w/P90s, & Marshalls though.........atleast back then. He still tours regularly & lives here in Florida, so I see him pop up every now & then at some of the local places; haven't seen him in years though.

And Pat Thrall (Strats) was a monster player, especially live. :headbang:

Re: Pat Travers sound

What era are you wondering about?

During the "Go for What You Know" era, he used the A/DA Flanger, an MXR Phaser (100, I think), MXR Blue Box, a Cry Baby, and an Echplex or two. He used multiple metal-front Marshall heads in a wet/dry setup, and a Leslie cabinet to boot. It was a Pete Cornish pedalboard, and one of the main insprirations for my first board.

His main guitar back then was the double-cut Melody Maker with humbuckers.I had one of those, too.

ya the MXR Blue Box.... what exactly does that pedal do?

i saw Pat Travers a few years ago in Toronto opening for The new Doors line up... he tore the roof off the place... the new Doors was so lame sounding after Pat... He had a PRS and all i could see on stage was a single no name 4x12.... and sitting ontop of the 4x12 looked like a Crate power Blook sized thing... someone at the show tried to tell me Pat was using a Vox Modeler floorboard but i don't think so... but, If he had amps somewhere they were hidden well

Re: Pat Travers sound

ps the second guitarist on this King Biscuit recording form 1984 is Jerry Riggs

i'm not sure if they are using Delays on their boards but at times their guitars are quite heavy with it... maybe a combo of concert hall delay and the guy adding during the albums mix.... but to try and copy this albums sounds i'll need my delays...

Re: Pat Travers sound

The Blue Box is a distortion with an octave-down added (Or is it two octaves down? I can't remember.) Travers uses it in the solo on "Makin" Magic" (Go For What You Know) along with the phaser... it kinda reminds me of Ernie Isley.

The only other use of the Blue Box that I can think of is Pagey on In Through The Out Door.

Re: Pat Travers sound

go to his website, he has a rundown (or used to) of his stage gear. Pattravers.com
I remember that he used Marshall JCM900 because it was the only Marshall, that had a strong enough effects loop to use his rack gear.
I did sound for him about 10 yrs ago, and at that time, he was using a 5150.
I just found this: http://www.hamptonplace.com/tonedepot/settings/muspt.php

Here is one of my favorite clips of Pat:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOOaxZ2q7k

ya thanks for the info... i've been using a 5150 to get close...

i went on Dunlop's web site yesterday and read the description of the MXR Blue Box... seems like a cool pedal.... you can hear Pat and Jerry use something like that for a second at the end of the Snorted Wiskey on the live cd i have... they both are using the trem bar to dive and one of them has an octave effect on for it at the same time so it really goes low!!!

looking at some of the youtube clips you can clearly see the ADA Flanger at his feet in various clips
