So are these similar? PATB1 vs Dimarzio Norton.

How would they compare? I know the PATB1 is a tad bit more of a modern sounding Duncan offering. Is one better at cleans than the other etc..

It's going in the bridge of a strat.

thx

In some ways I think. Both fat and smooth, deep mids. The Norton is a little tighter. Great harmonics on both. Sound radically different though. The PATB1 is a high figh sounding pickup and the Norton is kind of a classic Dimarzio sound. My 2 cents!

Thanks :)

When you say high fidelity- I wonder what you mean.

Also, not sure I understand the loose bass vs tight bass thing.

As a reference point, is the EVH brown sound loose bass or tight bass?

trying to understand- newby here. Thank you

Just means that it has a modern voicing. I never heard a pickup that sounded like it. Definitely has it's own thing going. Loose would be like a JB or Custom Custom. Not sure but I think EVH used either a Custom Custom or a 59. I don't think the 59 is loose but I do think the PATB1 is. You can probably find more EVH info in a forum search.

Just a few days ago I came across a Jackson guitar with a Norton in the bridge. Had no idea that I was playing it at first. Ran it through an Engle Thunder. It was a great sound. I found out after a while that it was a Norton and I just thought to myself that it sounded even better than I remembered. Either pickup is going to sound very good. But I think the PATB1 might be a little more picky about the guitar it goes in. Very FAT! I haven't played a PATB1 for a long time but I remember distinctly how it sounded to me. Some more forum bros can tell you more about it.

ED had and has still what is known as a more loose tone
compared to the more tight compressed metal EMG 81 tone for instance
the norton sounds a lot like ED's F.U.C.K tone even though dimarzio recomends the tone zone.( i dont agree with this)
you may really dig the blues PATB-3 by duncan
this pup has the older evh feel and can do metal if pushed with the right amp of course.
real versitle and clean and has great harmonics, much nicer than the norton and patb 1 overall IMHO:fing2:

Re: PATB1 vs Dimarzio Norton

Does the PATB-1 get anywhere near a EVH tone? Or is it not good at that type of thing?

When I saw you post in this thread today I thought you were updating us with the results of your decision! Still thinking about it? LOL! No the PATB will not get you that sound. It's not voiced that way. I've heard EVH used a 59 and a Custom Custom. To me the Custom Custom has a very brown sound as does the 59. From what you're comparing and what you're wanting to do it seems like the Norton is the best fit. Then I think maybe you need to be looking at the Custom Custom now.
