Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

I just saw Sir Paul's performance during the Grammy's... first time I saw someone play through Mesa bass cabs.

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

Paul's performance of Helter Skelter was the highlight of the show! That guy can still ROCK! Makes the Rolling Stones seem even older now! (if thats possible)

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

He and everybody playing with him played Mesa's at the Red Square concert.

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

Because Mesa makes the best bass amps on the planet, duh!

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

Mesa 400+ = OMFG.

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

a guy I know has one of those hofner basses..the originals from the 60's....I play it every now and again...it's so light it feels like a toy!

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

That Hofner was still his Beatle's era Hofner right?

Most bassist that I admire either plays Ampeg, Gallien or Harkte... I always though Ampeg was for bass as Marshall was for guitar... Oh well...

I think I should but that Red Square dvd. I have the back in the US, but I can't remember him playing through Mesas.

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

I didn't see the whole show, but I saw Paul's performance, and he ROCKED THE HOUSE!
you could feel the electricity in the audience, even over TV

and it was great seeing him playing the old Hofner

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

Paul's been playing that Hofner again for years. (since he ditched the Wals)

Supposedly that's THE Beatle bass. It looks like it- but with "relic-ing" being the art form that it is- who knows. When he started using it again, it still had the setlist taped to it from 25 years before...

I saw him on the 2002 tour and he literally tossed that bass across the stage to his roadie. I'm not kidding. That thing is frickin' priceless, and he casually tossed it 15-20 feet to his roadie. So, it means something to him because he's using it- but I think he may have had a replica made.

Every OLD Hofner I've played has sucked ass. REALLY TINY nut widths, and the strings are WAY too close together, not to mention they're not the most "lively" sounding instruments through the best amps... I've played a newer one that played pretty cool, and it sounded 'all right,' but that thing has got to be in his hands...

Re: Paul McCartney and Mesa Boogie?

There's a couple of bass players around here that use the Mesa 215 EVM cabs and the 400+. I think, and apparently all the bassists who sit in at the the jams these guys run agree, that these are great sounding amps. Imagine, a bass amp that has---GASP---TONE!

I don't know what Paul is using for a bass head, but I suspect that he is still using a Mesa Quad Preamp for both his bass and guitar work.

Lots of cats use Boogie bass cabs...Flea's been thumpin' on 'em for at least 10 or 15 years.

I think he just played Mesa bass amps and cabs. They were using Vox, Bad Cat, Ashdown, and Fender amps for the guitars.

I believe the Ashdowns were for the other guys bass.

Paul was a guitarist primarily before the Beatles had a record deal. When Stu Sutcliffe left the band, Paul switched over to bass because he felt that George and John were both better players. Generally guitarists prefer smaller necks such as that of a Fender Jazz or a Hofner because it is more comfortable for the hand.

I thought Paul changed to bass when he broke a guitar string on a live gig on his previous band? Or at least that's what I've read.

Flea was using Gallien on the Live at Slaine Castle DVD?
