pearly gates and 59 neck or antiquitys

I am going to be purchasing a new Epiphone les paul plus top and I am up in the air about what pickups to replace the stock ones with. I mainly play blues, and classic/southern rock with a little metal thrown in and even some Jazz. I was thinking maybe a Pearly gates in the bridge and a 59 in the neck or a pair of Antiquitys. Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: pearly gates and 59 neck or antiquitys

The '59 in the neck of a LP can be way too boomy unless you always play single notes or pairs or something. It is very different from the Ant is that it gets snorty very quickly as you play harder. The Ant is much more organic and interesting.

The PG has a low-mids push that you might or might not like in a LP. The Ant bridge is very honky and again even. This is a more difficult matter of test.

Re: pearly gates and 59 neck or antiquitys

I have an epi LP and a 59 in the neck, I don`t know if all epi`s are the same but on mine the 59 came with long leg base and it was to deep a pup for the cut out and had to put the shortleg base from the stock pup on the 59 to get adjustment room. I just built a LP and put Pearly Gates in the bridge and neck,, if you want to hear what they may sound like in your set up look for my thread Pearly Gates. The pearly`s have a raunch to them, if you have them very close to the strings it will be all balls and lack sweetness, play with the height and find the sweet spot and you should be fine. I swapped out the A5 mag in the 59 neck for a A3 roughcast,,helped get rid of ALOT of the boomyness.

ive got the 59N and PGb in my epi, it will do what you want. u0pt is basically right, if i was to pick nits, the PG is a little spiky, or brittle or something, and the 59 is a little boomy/bassy.

if you could listen or play both, i would.

I'd do it the other way around.....'59b and PGn

+1.

The PG is a terrific neck pup. You won't find many complaints about it there. But in the bridge it's a different story. Some people hate the spikiness it can have in some guitars.

The '59 is kinda the same idea, but the opposite. It is fabulous in the bridge, but tends to be boomy, too scooped and too much high-end in the neck, even with an A3 or A4 in it.

So I would also recommend: '59b/PGn. This is a great combo.

Re: pearly gates and 59 neck or antiquitys

The PG neck still can be too bassy in the neck, but not nowhere close as boomy as the '59. The PGn also lacks that special sparkle that the Antiquity has. You might be able to fix that by getting an unpotted PG.

Re: pearly gates and 59 neck or antiquitys

well, it looks like most everyone agrees 59 bridge and pg neck. Ive been listening to several samples of les paul guitars with Antiquities and 59/pg installed and much to my surprise the Antiquities didnt seem to sound as good as i thought they would compared to the other pickups. Looks like 59 bridge and pg neck. Thanks to everyone for the advise and if anyone else has any opinions please let me know, I plan on making the purchase in a few weeks.

Where is the spike in the PG? Is it an upper-mid spike like what a lot of people complain about in the JB? Or is it more of a lower-mid "bark and growl"? I agree about the 59n being a bit on the boomy side, so Im going to replace the A5 with an A2 mag. I was thinking of replacing my JB with something a bit less output, like the PG, 59 or A2P. I just dont know what the big differences would be. My Custom tends to be on the brighter side of LPs, since it has an ebony fingerboard, so something with more low-mid growl and raunch would probably balance it out better.
