Re: Pearly Gates and Les Pauls / Advice please
Magnet swapping is very easy. The hardest part is taking off a cover if there's one on there. Loosen the screws under the base plate, gently and carefully pry up the coils slightly. If they are potted, just go slow. Some people say to use needle nose pliers and pull the magnet out, but you risk chipping the magnet. I prefer to use a small screw driver and push gently from the other side. If you are going to do this though, you have to watch out for the wire soldered to ground that usually runs across one side. You want to find the side where all the wires are connected, and push from that side, so you can pull with your fingers from the other side. Once it's out, just slip the new one in it's place.
To save time, I hold the pup over the strings and check the middle position to see if the neck and bridge are out of phase. They'll sound more week in the middle and a little honky. If they are, just take the magnet out and flip it. Or you can leave it like that. Some people like it.
I am a big fan of putting A2s in Gibson pickups. Sometimes it yeilds "that" tone. Especially in a LP bridge.
BTW, I recently tried the new BB 3 from Gibson or whatever it's called. It sucked huge. The funny thing is that to me, it was a total SD ripoff. And a lame one at that. Think CC meets Seth, and just plain wrong. All the compression of the CC and dull dull dull. I don't recommend this one to anyone, unless they are playing something made out of beer cans.
For the record, I don't think there's anything wrong with SD sharing winds among models. When you nail the wind you want in a certain wire guage it only makes sense. I would never say that they are trying scam poeple or anything like that. But if we are clever enough to figure it out, there's nothing wrong with using it to our advantage. We all like hybrids, don't we?
