I just installed a Stellartone ToneStyler in my DC135T. While the PG(b) is my favorite bridge pickup, in all koa, the tone is warm, and the mids are a bit too much. The ToneStyler seems to accentuate this even more, and so, it's time to replace the pickup.

After listening to the clips and reading up on the pickups, my choices came down to:

Custom 5
StagMag
'59 (possibly)
(I could also do a Custom Custom with another magnet)

I do just about any style (more blues, fusion.studio), not necessarily metal.

I like the output level, but I'd maybe go a little bit hotter, but it needs to sound good clean and still have good dynamics (something I love about the Pearly Gates).

I like a clear top end, but not thin sounding, or overly bottom heavy.
It also needs to sound good split into single coil mode.

All suggestions welcome.

If you can spare extra 60 70 dollars, I would highly recommend a Brobucker (a custom shop 10K PAF wound with #42 plain enamel coated wire, just like the PG is). You can find tons of information in the forum about that pickup.

It has an aged (degaussed, i.e. weaker) alnico 5 magnet, and its bobins is mismatched. Essentially think of the PG with tighter bass, a little less uppermid scream, less but more textured lowermids, with higher output. It is not very bright (which I think is a cool thing), but is not very dark either. I hope that its highs would be enough for your needs.

BTW splitting it gives a very genuine single coil tone because the slug bobin measures 5K with #42 wire.

Hope that helps,

B

That was my thought too. Listen to Doc and Jeremy. They have great ears.
