Pearly Gates construction?

Hi guys,

My A2P neck is a bit smooth for me, prefer something with more grit, but still with the Alnico 2 "looseness". I already have a 59n in another guitar, so now I'm considering either a Pearly Gates or a Seth Lover for the neck.

Is the Pearly Gates 42AWG PE? Or is it 43AWG Formvar like the A2P?

Thank you.

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

i'm pretty sure it's 42AWG, though i'm not sure about coatings and such. it's supposedly based on billy gibbons' '59 les paul pickups though, which are old paf-types. oh, and about the "uneven wind" thing, that's all marketing. seriously there's no more difference between the PG's coils and other standard humbuckers, which is usually about .02k between coils btw.

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

go for the PG Neck, I have both and I am sure that PG is more yr way then the Seth Lover.
The SethNeck is also smooooth - but nice. PGNeck has more "cut" yep its my favourite neck PU - the Antiquity neck comes next.

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

The PG does not have an uneven wind.

I honestly don't know where it gets the sizzle from and/or why it's more expensive. Must be some form of rubber chicken waiving.

well, the PG and the screamin' demon are both signature models, and they both cost ~$95~....;)

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

its 42 pe

ive never seen anything from duncan that says anything about an uneven wind for the pg so its not really a marketing ploy, just misinformation that gets passed around.

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

Thanks guys, lets hope that the store stock either of them...

p/s Does the Seth have any bite/edge to it? I have the bridge version, sounds great to me.. But the A2P in the neck is too "polite" and the bass too mellow... I've already tried adjusting pup and screw height.. The sweet highs are great though..

The A2P is 43awg formvar? I always thought it was 42awg (like an under-wound '59), and that the Jazz was the only low-output 43awg Duncan humbucker?

Re: Pearly Gates construction?

This part of your statement is not correct.

To your original post, it sounds like you'd like the Pearly Gates neck.

Just curious, what is the A2P constructed of then? 42awg formvar?

Thanks for your suggestion, does the PG have the honkiness of the Seth? I like the honk of the Seth in my bridge very much.

Swap in a a-5 to get bass response and a lttle more grit. (this does NOT make it a jazz or a 59 either) maybe somewhere in the middle.

What he said above - you need a A4 or A5 in the neck. A2/A3 always seem dark, mellow and relaxed. How they get bite out of the PG w/ an A2 I'll never know....

Just found this: http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/The Legendary Seymour Duncan o/

"The bobbins are polycarbonate, which is a very durable plastic. We wind the APH bobbins with 42-gauge plain enamel magnet wire, just like the original P.A.F. pickups. The bottom plate is nickel silver and the hookup wire is four-conductor. Each pickup is hooked up and soldered by hand and is then wax potted in a vacuum chamber for elimination of microphonic feedback." -Seymour Duncan.
