Pearly Gates great neck pickup?

I am finding that I am never satisfied my stock neck humbuckers, I find they get quite bassy and muddy and the low to medium frequencies tend to crackle and not blend together very well especially with overdrive. I want them to be smoother. I mainly combine it with the bridge split for cleans and on its own but find it very hard to solo with it because it seems to mud out with gain rather than sustain with enough articulation. What do you guys think of the pearly gates? Is it smooth, creamy, rich and articulate cause thats what im after. Ill combine it with a Custom in the bridge of my mahogany PRS.

i have heard it is to bassy. and that may be the case if you put it in a mahogany guitar. i think a jazz or 59n would do a better job but i may be wrong.

Im not too worried about how much bass it has but more how it sounds.

I have a PGn in my #1 go to guitar. Great mid presence without being overly thick and a smooth top end that cuts nicely without being harsh. It sings more than screams with nice note definition and articulation. It is not as bottom present as the 59n but it surely doesn't lack.

I have it in a LP and I'm easily able to get great warm clean tones and a killer Ted Nugent type of lead voice. It really is a killer neck pickup.

It's in my ash strat and it's a great neck pickup. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants warm and smooth...yet it's got a good pick attack as well. Very sweet pickup.

The PGn is a sweet sounding pickup but it's a little too warm and smooth for me. I like the 59 for it's glassy characteristics and it's sensetivity.

I like it in my Lester, although I'm also partial to the SH-55N.

That is why my pgn accomodates an alnico 3 magnet! Great results. The same for 59 with an a3 as well.

..Though, your soley a 'finger-picker', right? ..That'll add to the warmth/smoothness, if you don't use your fingernails.

yes - that's exactly what it is! I have a PG set with nickle covers in my main LP and they are awesome.
I gigged yesterday and as usual was blown away with the tone - smooth, creamy, sweet, warm and singing. At this stage I can't ever imagine wanting to change them!
Don't know what kind of thing you are into but my guitar with these pups goes from vintagey paf blues, to ZZ Top, to Warren Haynes right through to Zakk as you crank up the gain. Couldn't more happy with the PGs!

The alnico 5 Jazz and 59N will have more bass than the alnico 2 PGN and Seth Lover...and more treble than the Seth Lover.

Because the PG uses unbalanced coils, the a2 PG will be be brighter than the Seth Lover with it's balanced coils.

So if you'd like a little clearer tone with less bass than the 59N or Jazz, and more treble than the Seth Lover, the PGN would be a great choice.

Warren Haynes has used the PG's in his Les Pauls...gets a great tone.

I have one in my dual humbucker Fender Japan Strat as the neck pickup.

The PG reminds me a little of a Tom Holmes humbucker...

Sounds like an awesome pickup to try....I've always thought the '59 was too warm IMO and sometimes muddy as well....I've always liked something with a little more presence/cut.

I don't think the 59 is to warm or muddy...just more bass than I usually need.

It actually has plenty of highs, but also alot of bass that tends to mask the highs a little, IMO.
