Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

Will this work well? I have a 59/Jazz in the neck position of one of my teles and a PG in the other, and I'm not happy with the PG compared with the hybrid. What do y'all think?

In THE hybrid thread, BachtoRock wrote that the PG was about the same as a 59, but with fewer windings. Will this matter?

Hybrid experts, please enlighten me.

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

The two coils in the PG are different, so it matters which coil you take.

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

I just made a deal w/ a forum brother for a Jazz neck PU, so I'm bumping this one last time. Hasn't anyone tried a PG/Jazz hybrid. What will be the difference between the two coils of the PG, and the two resulting hybrids.

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

It will be very similar to the 59/Jazz... the biggest difference would be determined if you use an A5 or the PG's A2 magnet

BachToRock, Thanks for the reply. Similar to a 59/Jazz is what I want. The hybrid set I bought from you sounds amazing in my thinline. Do you remember what magnet you used in that one? I'm guessing I want an A5 in this one, but I'm not sure. How would you describe the difference between them?

That is what they say but, I have measured them and they seem to measure equal. Or at least to Duncan's usual tolerances.

Yeah. I believe I recall Evan coming into a PG thread a short while ago stating that the coils were virtually the same. Nothing mismatched, just a misconception. I can't quote him though.

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

They are A5's in your pickups...

The A2 will have a softer attack and not be as bright... possibly too dull sounding depending on the particular instrument, string gauge and player's technique.

All pickups have the potential for slightly mis-matched coils when read by a meter because the QC tolerance is +/- 5% on Duncan coils... an individual humbucker coil targeted at 4k would pass as low as 3.8k or as high as 4.2k.

A fine example of this is the Duncan Tone chart which shows different DC Resistance values of 14.1k and 14.4k for 2 of the different "Custom" models... these are spec'd to be the exact wind, but the particular pickups used for the offical reading show the variance encountered in the real world.

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

Now, what about the difference between the PG slug/Jazz screw hybrid, and the Pg screw/Jazz slug pickup. Any significant difference tonally between the two, assuming both have A5 magnets?

Re: Pearly Gates/Jazz(n) Hybrid?

The only negligable difference would be if you did any coil splitting... the STUD coil is the standard active coil per Duncan wiring... Obviously, the Jazz coil would be slightly brighter
