Pearly Gates neck questions-?

Hey,

I am interested in a Covered Pearly Gates neck pickup.

Is it a good match for the SH5 Custom?

I was going to go with a Jazz in the neck originally. It will be used in a PRS style guitar with a Mahogany body and Maple top. It also has a set neck.

I want a neck pickup that will handle cleans and overdriven leads as well. Any opinions appreciated. Thanks all.

HI and welcome to the forum.
I have a PG in one guitar together with the SH5 and I think they are a great match. My PG is not covered though.
I haven't tried the Jazz but someone described the PG as being a little "rude" in the upper mids - and that I think is why it complements the Duncan Custom so well. They also sound cool together.
And yes, the PG does handle clean and distorted sounds well.

Tony hit the nail on the head. The Pearly Gates is the hottest of the Duncan PAF style pups. It has mismatched coils which contribute to that snarl you hear in the frequency range that the cut/presence knob affects.

Some folks like A2 pups in the neck some like A5. I am personally an A5 guy for most neck slots. I have a Jazz in my Heritage 150 and it is smooth but not dark or muddy sounding. It has more top end than the PAF syle pups and less bass than the 59 and more mids than the 59. It handles different tunings well too. A clear articulate pup, regardless of the amount of gain.

The PG is the coolest neck pickup that Duncan offers, IMO. It does decent clean tones and is a monster under high-gain conditions. If you need a reference, listen to any of Warren Haynes stuff from the mid-90's Gov't Mule albums or any bootlegs from the ABB with Warren (pre-2002).

The PG neck does not have mismatched coils BTW. I notice the rude quality in the PG bridge but, I dont notice it in the neck version all that much at all. I have played most of Duncans neck buckers and the PG neck has become by far my favorite.

The PGN in my Strat does have mismatched coils. I just measured it: 3.48K & 3.62K. This particular PGN is a 7.1K pickup. I was able to measure it when it was unsoldered from the switch as I'm doing a little work on that guitar right now.

The PG is good match IMO for any bridge that I have put it in with. I have played it with a Distortion, Custom Custom, and a few stock pups. It all depends on what a guy is wanting to hear and a PG can just about do it all.

I have a pair of PG's in my Tokai Love Rock. They go together like they were designed to go together. The neck is quite a nice pickup.

I'd say don't get too stuck on the resistance figures.

That said, all the ones I have seen had slightly mismatched coils. Particularly, my 7.40K PGn had more than 0.30 K difference between the slug and the screw coils.

PG neck rocks! (or not...) Cleans up nicely with the volume, very full, and the high end stay longer with the volume down even without 500k pots....I'd think it would be awesome with them - probably very sparkly. I like a fatter tone. I see a lot of people who like it with the Custom. I prefer the custom custom.

I know Robert S loves the C-5/PG in his #1 Les Paul.
MRID is letting me borrow a PG set and EVH this week. I can't wait to try those, because those are some of the few Duncans I don't have experience with.

a PG set is my fav PAF style set, and a PGn is my fave neck bucker ever!

Yes, please let us know about the PG's. Been thinking about those in my LP. I'm almost sure I want that in the neck. Either that or the Jazz. Bridge?? I just don't know yet.
