Are the non-hole covers bad for tone?

Not necessarily, but you lose the possibility of compensating for string and/or coil imbalance. I wouldn't want to miss this possibility, as it's quite common to set the screws following the radius of the neck as a base for good tone and string balance.

You would lose the ability to fine tune with polepieces. Im not sure that they would fit without changing the polepieces either.

Edit: ^ what the Lt said!

Re: Pearly Gates Plus in a Sheraton II?

I just had my Epiphone es335 set up with a pair of Pearly's at 13th st. guitar. I wanted to get away from that really warm jazzy tone and inject something brighter. It still has enough bottom end but the overall tone sounds much cleaner. The guys at 13th passed it around after it was done and thought it sounded excellent clean and a screamer when distorted. I play clean so I'm very happy with the Pearly Gates!
