Pearly Gates/STK-S4/STK-S4 auto split with push/pull wiring - HOW??

Hi there,

I've got a question about wiring:
I'm gonna replace the pickups in a HSS-strat to TB-PG1b/STK-S4m/STK-S4n. There's a regular 5-way switch there, a push/pull volume knob, and one tone control. Here's the setup I want:

1. Neck (hum cancelling)
2. Neck/mid (true single coils)
3. Mid (hum cancelling)
4. Mid/bridge (true single coil/inner coil bridge)
5. Bridge (full humbucker)

Additionally I'd like to be able to split the bridge HB with the push/pull control when I use the bridge PU alone.

I can't find a schematic of this setup anywhere online... Can anyone help me out, or at least point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Grtz

Re: Pearly Gates/STK-S4/STK-S4 auto split with push/pull wiring - HOW??

Firstly, the bottom coil of stacked singles only offer humbucking functionality, in the literal sense of eliminating 60Hz hum. They do not offer the same tonality as a side-by-side humbucker since the hum-cancelling coil does not get anywhere near the strings.

2nd, when the R+W of a Duncan 4-conductor side-by-side humbucker (JB, PG, etc) are grounded, as is shown in most SD diagrams, the slug coil is the one that is active. In this case, since the bridge pickup's slug coil is to the inside, following any standard auto-splitting wiring diagram will achieve the results you're after.

However, if you're dead-set on having your single coils hum, this will get you there:

BUT you would wire the bridge pickup like this:

Thanks for your reply.

The singles would never hum! If the middle PU is RW RP, which it is, the in between positions would be hum-cancelling. The other single positions would have a stack in hum-cancelling mode. This setup would effectively have an auto split in positions 2 and 4. I want to be able to only split the Pearly Gates with the push/pull.

Hope that clears it up...

Ok, I can understand the auto-split in position 2 for the bridge + middle (split the PG), but I'm not understanding the auto-split in position 4 (neck and middle). You're not gaining any tonal benefit from splitting stacked singles.

Just following SD's advice... But say I wouldn't split those, how would I approach the auto split/manual split of the HB?

How about this diagram?

http://www.seymourduncan.com/suppor...matics.php?schematic=3lil_hum_1v_2t_super5way

It is color coded for humbuckers so for your neck and bridge STKs you need to consider this translation, I just took this from comparing each pickup wiring diagram that is included in the pickup description at website.

Pearly gates Green+Bare -> STK-S4 Black+Bare This connects to ground permanently
Pearly gates Red+White -> STK-S4 Black This connects to ground only when spliting. Slug coil from the PG, tone coil from the stack.
Pearly gates Black -> STK-S4 White This is output so it connects to 5 way switch.

Disclaimer: I have not tried this one as I have never been able to use a super 5 way switch. Also, I don't understand why they kind of reverse the colors for the middle humbucker, I guess there is no RWRP little humbucker would be the reason why so in that case you don't need to revert it.

I think it makes perfect sense to split the stack for a better quack. I do however like my HSS to have a regular SSL-1 in the middle, I don't need a super 5 way switch and it does the hum cancellation when combined with slug coil from a SD humbucker (SSL-1 is historically correct so it is already RWRP respect to duncan HB's slug coil) or combined with the split neck. Middle position is the only humming one but I can live with that. I have not compared but I would think the quack of a true single coil would be better than a stacked one, I guess that is why people split their stacks in notch position.

I took another look to that diagram I am convinced they are chaning the order for the middle humbucker in order to use the other coil and get the RWRP in the notch position. Being that said you don't need to do that as your STK-S4 middle will be RWRP, you just keep using the same color translation from my previous post.

Thanks! Sounds andere looks logical. The only thing I miss is the push/pull volume control to split the Pearly Gates... Any suggestions?

You can put another wire going from the connector in the switch that Red+White are wired, go tru one of the switches of the push/pull then to ground.
