I have the 59's in my Paul and I was thinking about Pearly Gates. What are the differences. Playing through a Carvin Legacy or a Marshall., Mainly the Carvin.

An upper mid spike in the PG's. Some love it, some don't. Adds a bright sizzle to the top...kind of a "presence" boost. I LOVE it in the neck...lot's of people do...haven't had one in the bridge, but that's where I think a lot of people have troble with the upper mid thing, sort of the same way some don't like a JB. Can't speak to either amp...

They are IMO basically the next step up in zippier PAF's. If you want a little more juice (just a little) and a bit more "zing" PG's would be the way go.

In my Schecter (mahogany body with maple top) the PG bridge seemed brighter (that upper mid spike) and seemed to have a little more gain due to the mismatched coils. I liked the PG better.

As far as the neck versions, i cant say. I have only tried the 59 neck (it was 59/59) and the jazz (PGb/jazz) in that guitar. I preferred the Jazz because it had a lot less bass.

I agree with the midrange being more peaky and I always feel like the 59 has more lows and an overall smoother or flatter eq...I Like the PGB,but I'm one of the few guys that doesn't like the PGN...

The 59 is A5 and the PG uses A2....You'd want to think the 59 is tighter in the lows and has more chime?

IMHO, there's nothing better in a Lester than a pair of Pearly Gates.

I'd say the '59 is more early Clapton than Page.

OK, if we're drawing direct lines between pickups....and clapton is the 59 and Billy is the PG...

What's Page?

Within the last couple of months, I have had both in my Les Paul. For years I had Gibson Classic+ and I thought those were the best. I ordered a Pearly Gates set. I installed them and I thought the neck pickup was great, but I did not care for the bridge. That "sizzle" that otheres speak of kid of sits on top of the fundamental pickup tone and to me sounds abnormal. I thought that was what I wanted, but it was not. I then got a Screamin' Demon, nope, a C5, nope, and finally a '59, yup. I think the plain old Duncan '59 is the best of the bunch. But that's just my opinion. It makes me want to play the Les Paul again.

I think that my BBPros will eventually go the wayside to a pair of 59s...neck and bridge...

I Like the PGB alot but I didn't care for the mid peak and the sizzle I heard with the PGN....Alot depends on the gear and the guitar you get this pickup in. Like anything else,gear,strings,amp,effects,etc...is a big part.

Re: Pearly Gates vs. 59 in Les Paul?

I like the C-5/59 a lot, because it's like a 59 set with a slightly beefier sounding bridge pickup. Anytime I've tried PG's, they didn't sound quite right with my amp rig, so out they went. I think I like the C-5/59, CC/APH, and Seth set the best in LP's.
