Pearly gates vs Dimarzio PAF

Re: Pearly gates vs Dimarzio PAF

H&H just may be fave album by anybody ever, but I still think the 1st 5 just like you said

Re: Pearly gates vs Dimarzio PAF

Which is probably true, but i highly doubt people are referring to that era of Iommi, when people say Sabbath, i would pretty much guarantee they are referring to the first 5 albums era.

Too bad...I think his sound peaked on Heaven & Hell.

Re: Pearly gates vs Dimarzio PAF

I'd say you can hear a serious difference from the early 70s through about '76. After that (maybe Never Say Die, through the Dio, Gillian, & Martin eras) you certainly hear the boosted, compressed sound. So just a few years with the stock stuff.

Moved to pre-amp gain??

Re: Pearly gates vs Dimarzio PAF

Since he said "Sabbath/Ghost" tone, he's definitely talking first 4 albums Sabbath. PAF or P90 will work for either, but the amp sound is WAAAAAAAAAAY more important.

Something everybody always overlooks with Tony is the positions he played in. It might seem intuitive to play "Iron Man" on the A and D strings, but he plays it up the neck on the E and A. Same with "Paranoid" and most of the classic stuff. Also, remember light strings with low action is a big part of that sound, too.
