pearly gates vs slash ap2

Re: pearly gates vs slash ap2

I have been trying to figure out how to warm up the PG that I have, but all I have done is make it brighter.

Run a resistor across the outer lugs of the volume pot. They're cheap and if you get a variety, you can alligator clip them (before soldering) to test them thru an amp and see what you like best. As a benchmark, a 470K resistor warms a 500K pot to sound like a 250K.

Re: pearly gates vs slash ap2

If I understand correctly, a plus is a trembucker bobbin, it's larger so it measures higher resistance but has the same number turns as a regular PG. the magnet would likely do more to change the sound than the wire.

But my guess would be the A5 is in there to counter 250k pots and keep it sounding like a PG, but that is a pure guess on my part.
pg+ is regular spaced per fenders request. there are a few extra turns and the a5. personally i prefer the normal pg over the pg+

Yup, that is what my volume pot already is, and it's still really bright, and I am still trying to warm it up some.

is this is a strat or lp? if its a lp, is the tone also 250k? if its a strat is the bridge pup attached to the tone control? frequently they are not and it makes a difference even on 10. you can also put a cover on the pup if there isnt one and it will warm up the high end a touch

Re: pearly gates vs slash ap2

Yar, I did have a cover on it once using 500k V and T and even in ash it was much warmer. Right now it's running in alder on 250k volume only, which is pretty much the same resistance as 2x 500k's in parallel. I would need a super switch to add it to tone controls, so for now I am stuck running it straight through the volume to have an auto split running on the other side of the switch and still get individual tone controls on the middle and neck single coils. Maybe I will have to get a pickguard with a hole big enough for a covered humbuckers in the bridge as well. Lot's of aftermarket pickguards put the bridge humbucker about a 1/4" closer to the bridge though, and that screws up the split sound with the middle pickup, and makes the humbucker a little brighter, but does make the bass tighter. Also Fender doesn't seem to make covered humbucker sized hole pickguards readily and easily available with that proper placement of the 'bucker.

I got the Slash set and I’m not a big fan of them... I don’t mind the bridge one but I really don’t like they neck one. I find they can be a bit too dark and can be a bit muffled sounding especially the neck pickup... I’m trying to think of a better descriptive word than muffled but I hope you know what I mean.
Totally agree with you here. The neck sounds dark even on my Maple-capped LP (with 500k pots). I intend to experiment with a new neck (starting with PG).

Re: pearly gates vs slash ap2

I don't find the Slash set too warm at all. In fact, they were designed towards the opposite. When Gibson came out with the Slash Sig LP's and sent them to him for approval, they shipped with his normal A2P pups. Well, they didn't sound right. The new LP's were darker sounding, especially when compared to his Derrig. So Seymour set out to make the darker Gibson's sound like the brighter Derrig, and wound the new Slash pups.

So, the Slash should brighten up most guitars, and that has been my experience....so far. I have a darker sounding Dean Hardtail and the Slash set has been the best pickup set in it so far, even better than my normal favorite the Seth Lover.

Just my $.02 and what I learned from watching/reading vids & articles about the new Slash set.
