Re: Peavey 5150 combo vs JCM900 combo

I forget some of the numbers...the MK III is the SL-X right?
Nope, the MkIII is pre-SL-X. The SL-X is also known as the MkIV Master Volume.
I used to own a 5150 head and now own a MkIII 2100 head. I've also played both combos. IMO, the Marshall wins hands down.
Sure, the 5150 has a decent clean and is dual channel where as the Marshall is one with two switchable master volumes, but the 5150's high gain just sounds buzzy. I did not like the tones I was getting out of it. The head was great, the combo....eh. Now, that Marshall 2501 combo, it's the same chasis, same circuitry as the 2500 head. The faceplate's letters/numbers are printed the other way around and the chasis is mounted in a combo enclosure.
Those MkIII's do metal with ease. Want some more gain (like they need it), just push the front end with an overdrive or boost pedal like the SFX-01. See my sig for some MkIII clips. One of them is a Judas Priest tune.
The reason you don't see a lot of people playing the JCM900 MkIII is because there's not a lot of them out there, and many write off the JCM900's at first glance (thanks to the Dual Reverbs and switch to 5881's). The MkIII's were made for 2 years where the 5150 was made for over 10. 5150's are a lot easier to come by.
