Peavey 5150II for Classic Rock ?

Re: Peavey 5150II for Classic Rock ?

That is a good and cheap idea. However, a simple tube swap isn't going help the power section or the PSU. It took a thorough mod complete with an OT upgrade to finally make the Peavey actually peel a bit of paint off the ceiling.
It's a cool amp but it ain't no Hiwatt.

With a 12AY7 swapped into V1, these amps are absolutely awesome as a classic rock amp! The 12AY7 lowers the gain enough that the clean channel gets really clean and the high gain channel takes on a JCM800 character, complete with all the attack and dynamics that the 5150s typically lack...it almost completely takes all of the compression out of the amp. No modifications other than swapping out the one tube are required.

WOW . . . thanks for the info mate !

Strange that you would mention the HiWatt.
10min into IT MIGHT GET LOUD, there is a HiWatt behind Jimmy Page as he strums his trusty 'ol Les Paul.
I do not know if he was actually plugged into that amp, as he was surrounded by amps.

Re: Peavey 5150II for Classic Rock ?

for Jimmy Page type full stack sounds I would steer clear of the compressed 5150!

If on a budget I would look at other used amps in that price range, like the Laney AOR 100 or maybe a Peavey VTM 120. You might be able to find amps from the 70s era like an Ampeg V4 but with any of these amps that are 20+ years old, have a good repair tech in mind and set aside some funds, just in case ;)

I would LOVE to have a Laney AOR
One of my fave female guitar players, Liz Buckingham, uses one almost exclusively.
Sadly, there is non on this side of the world.
Buying one in the States and taking it home to be converted into a 220V amp is gonna end up costing more than an Orange Thunderverb 50.

No problem! Since I see you are a fan of the Laney AOR series, I'll go out on a limb and say that the 5150 with a 12AY7 in V1 will get you in the ballpark. The 5150 will have a lot more utility than the Laney though...as in, an accessible clean channel. I own an 8 knob AOR and it is a b!tch to dial in for two sounds. I currently use my effects processor to dial up the clean sound and attenuate the higher gain sound when the AOR function is kicked in; the 5150 can do this with just the channel switching. In a performance environment, the Peavey, with its two channels and master volumes on both is going to have a lot more utility.

Sounds good - thank you very much !

Listen to some of Electric Wizard's albums (not the latestone though) and see what Liz can do with her AOR !!!

She plays straight to amp = NO FX !!!
