PEAVEY 6505(5150) Opinions/clips?

Yeah, you're insane. They're the same exact thing.

I never played one, I just assumed a 6505 would be like a 5150 with a more modernized tone. Whoops.

Kev,

what was your overall opinion of those amps?

I like a lot about it but was always in a fight to get it to naturally open up. Tried a speaker change which definately helped but the note response is so tight that it always felt a bit stiff to me. I got my best results useing the low gain input and a couple 12aT7 tubes. I dug it more as a live amp than a recording amp.

Halen didn't use a 5150 on Unlawful he used a Soldano fronted through his Plexi. Balance is mostly the old Plexi with the 5150 being used for a couple tracks as well as dubs. Which leaves us at VHIII which outside of Fire in the Hole is a very spotty album tone wise. Easily the worst to date IMO. The live boots from the last Halen tour sound very harsh, just too much gain. Sadly Ed's hands and his ear just are not the same. I actually prefer the sounds Leslie West gets out of the 5150 he uses on some tracks I came across.

I also think that 5150 is on Jar Of Flies from Alice and Chains on a couple tracks. He and Ed hit it off when they toured together and he gave Jerry a stack. I like those tones quite a bit.

Re: PEAVEY 6505(5150) Opinions/clips?

I have heard a lot of guys used 5150's and get great tones but I have to admit the only time I tried one i sounded like crap...lately I have been thinking about trying one again...I need a decent head to use live that I won't be too worried about getting a rip or tear, etc...this is one of the amps I gonna look into.

Thanks Kev

So then, was it a plexi, soldano, or 5150 that EVH used on later recordings like Unchained and panama, or what? That super bright almost honky tone that just cut like hell.

Anything prior to 1991 is his Marshall Plexi. After that, it's either the 5150, Soldano, or his Plexi. I forgot he used a Soldano during For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I know he toured with the 5150's because I saw them twice that tour and his tone was great.

Speaking of his Plexi, I don't thing he used that at all on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. That amp took a dump right after OU812, hence the search for a new amp went on. He didn't think it would ever sound the same again. His techie at the time got it rebuilt for him right before the Balance recordings. I think he used it for a couple of songs on it.

5150's must have many locked away tones in them, I've heard alot of artist using 5150's, but never heard one that even got close to the tone eddie got with em. Almost everyone who uses a 5150 sounds different. Or erm.. Something like that.

On Unlawful I believe it was only used on On Top Of The World. I have seen interviews where Ed said maybe it was him and not the amp that was more the issue, his tastes were simply changing. Balance was mostly the Plexi as the main amp other than a few tunes lots of 5150 on it esp on the solos. That album is very underrated to me, it really grew on me.

Well, lots of people played Marshall's when Eddie used them and nobody got the same tones as he did either. There's more to the tone than the amp.

Balance is one of my favorite albums of theirs. Lots of great songs on it and great tone. I think that was the last really good tone he had. VHIII was OK but nothing spectacular and I haven't really liked it recently. Too buzzy sounding.

Re: PEAVEY 6505(5150) Opinions/clips?

I believe Candlebox used 5150 amps. There are some very solid rock tones from them.

Well i have the 5150 Original head... same amp..... LOVE IT!!!!!! It has the biggest bottom end of any amp i have tried out.... It does Metal but if you cut the gain back it does lots of classic rock sounds as well.... I'm on the look out to pick up a second one used for back up.

Yeah, TS9's and EMG's are what really make metal tones, IMO. The EMG's give it insane sustain and clarity, while the TS9's make them sit a bit better in a mix, saturates the sound more so you can lower gain, which increases clarity and decreases noise, as well as giving it a killer low end and mid sound.

That's interesting... I know a lot of people boost their tubes with OD's like the TS9 but to think that it can be a staple of a good metal tone when mixed with EMG's is cool. I never knew quite how it affected the amp itself to run an OD in front of it but now I know exactly.

But wouldn't it make more noise if you put a pedal in front of the noisy amp even with the gain down? What about clarity... how does adding more effects keep the sound clear?

I think you've misunderstood what DSS666 was saying a little. What DSS666 was saying about using pedals for the bulk of OD tones was that it allows the amp to work less hard, which in turn means it can operate much cleaner because all the signal clipping is happening outside of the amp. The amp itself doesn't care what sort of sound comes through it, it will treat a clipped signal exactly the same way it treats a clean signal. This means that while your ears are hearing some heavy distortion, your amp thinks you're playing much cleaner than you actually are.

I'm not sure I agree entirely with DSS666 here, but this basic princible is pretty solid. All he's saying is that a lot of people who play metal use far too much gain from their amp (post pre-amp, if that makes any sense). If you pull it back a little then you sound much bigger because you amp still responds to the dynamics of everything you play, instead of turning everything to mush.

I hope I've helped some way,
-Benja

I suggest you not ask for an amps settings when someone records a clip, as it will not project an accurate representation of what the amp can do. Let them EQ it to what they think sounds best with their axe, then go try it with yours.

Computer speakers can NEVER replicate the sound or feel of a 4x12.

Re: PEAVEY 6505(5150) Opinions/clips?

now i got the urge to use a 4x12 as my computer speakers... :burnout:

Hehe it'll sound like ****! Guitar speakers aren't made to produce the frequency range that audio speakers are.

Put it this way; When I'm recording, I'll chop everything below 80Hz and above 10-12KHz on guitars. ;)
