Peavey Classic 30 90's vs 2000's

I've found 2 peavey classic 30s for sale
one is a 1996 model for about €430 or so, it's loaded with a greenback.
The other is a circa 2008 - 2009 model for €300 , as far as I can tell is stock.

I was told that the older 90's classics have better transformer and better components than the newer models, is there any truth to this?

Thanks Guys

I know many swear to the ruggedness of the C30 but I personally had 2 die on me and wound up selling the 3rd all were due to cheap components not taking the heat. This would have been in the mid 90's. No idea on the newer ones. If it was me I would go for the newer one the extra 130 bones for a green back is too much.

I have not heard that. FWIW, that is a common theme, "ah, well, the older ones are better". I can tell you that the brand new C30s had some tweaks. Some, like the addition of a standby switch, are obvious. They also say they have improved the tranny, but I don't know enough to tell. I do know that both of those were user issues.

I had a C50 (probably late 90s/early 00s), and a C30 (2005ish), and ran them with no issues. I know of one touring pro (plays in Off Broadway) that tours for years with a mid/late 90s C50 with no issues.

All that said, while many do talk about PV reliability, it also is no secret that the Classic series are decent sounding amps built to a low price point. The components certainly are not over engineered, and if bought used, one may run into issues caused by an abusive previous owner. They can't take it like an old Hiwatt!

While I had no issues with two used Classic series amps (both sold due to moving), this time I opted for one of the brand new models. I figure since I'm good to my amps, it should give me many years of pleasure, because I'm the sole owner. For whatever reason, I'm becoming more paranoid when it comes to less expensive used modern production amps.

I've gone OT a bit, so I'd say get the newer one. Fewer unknown hours of use, and as Edgecrusher mentions, the GB really isn't worth E130. The Blue Marvel is an ok speaker despite what some may say...IMHO, of course, and YMMV!

I'll be interested to hear what you do!

In general, as things get newer, they change. Usually, for the better.

Had a chance to see one if my mates whose a phenomenal player play through a classic 30 last night, he was using it as a temporary replacement for hi mesa mark IV , needless to say his tone was miles better than his "normal" tone. I'll definitely be picking up a classic 30 :)
