Peavey Classic 30 or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I am after a 1x12 valve combo that is loud enough for small gigs (somtimes un-miked). I intend to test these two amps in the next week or so, but does anyone here have any opinions.
my main concerns are:
is the Classic 30 loud enough (i dont want a classic 50 as I only want a 1x12 not 2x12 or 4x10)?
is the Fender gain channel really that bad?
do both amps stay clean at high volumes or break up early?
Does the Fender work well with a good distortion pedal?

any views would be much appreciated.
Cheers

The Fender does work well with pedals.
It's distortion is not for me.
It is louder than hell and stays clean at high volumes.
It has a linear taper volume control which is very annoying if you want to play quietly.

The Peavey is plenty loud.
It has nice warm clean tone, but not as sparkly as the Fender.
It has a lead boost, which is a very nice feature.
I like it's distortion much more than the HRD.

The master volume on the Hot Rod is a linear taper but can be swapped out for an audio taper (which is what I did).

The amount of headroom depends really on the tubes your using and the bias setting. The Groove Tube 6L6's that are OEM on the Hot Rod are color coded according to how quickly they break up. Reds are the cleanest, white are middle of the road and the blues break up real early.

Pedals do work well with the Hot Rod but I hardly ever use anything except my Wah pedal because the amount of gain suits my style.

I also recommend upgrading the OEM Eminence speaker for a Jensen C12N. The Jensen really delivers a well balanced warm classic tone.

I've never tried the Fender but I do have the Classic 30. I'm just an at home player, but I like it loud and the C30 can get PLENTY loud, believe me. If you get one I would definatley contact Bob at www.eurotubes.com. Tell him what tones you're after from the amp and he'll set you up right. I put JJ's in my C30 and the differance was night and day.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

hmmm... timely post! I'm thinking about a classic 30 as a blues/jazz amp. Will it do the job? I'm looking for something to compliment my telecaster. Also, Stevo... do you know if the lead switch has a foot pedal control to it?

Does it come in blonde? You know what they say, blondes have more fun...

Re: Peavey Classic 30 or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Both are good amps, but I would lobby for a Deluxe Reverb. Outstanding tone, classic Fender Reverb, and takes pedals very well. I would also steer you toward the reissue Ampeg jet. Very sexy amp.

Re: Peavey Classic 30 or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I don't play jazz, but the C30 does the blues-rock thang well. It has a 'boost' button that gives nice gain, but it's on the control panel and is a manual finger operation... I use the footswitch for reverb only, the other switch is for channel swapping which I never use, I have a bunch of pedals to shape my tone. Of course I don't leave anything alone, so I gave it a nitro lacquer brushing, a Fender wheat cloth and old Magnavox logo... :13:
My Classic 30
AFAIK, it came in black Tolex and tweed...but it may have come in Blonde...or you could recover it like my '66 Champ

zak as you have probably figured out by now from the responses, you have chosen two really good single 12 amps - I would recommend just having a lot of fun in the music store until one stands out to you.

joelap - for the jazz/blues thing I would recommend giving a listen to Peavey's Delta Blues amp - it is so warm, nice cleans although it breaks up nicely - love that amp. It has a single 15 inch speaker which adds to its warmth and depth.

Thanks very much indeed for all that guys.
I will take my guitar on saturday to a couple of local shops and give em both a very good whirl.

IMVHO this amp is one of the best on the market as far as bang for the buck. New or used. I have seen them selling for $250 all the time. Great value.

LOUD! (40 class A watts). The clips on musiciansfriend don't do it justice. This thing smokes! Do yourself a favor and play this before you make a decision. It sounds good at low-volume levels, but be sure to crank it a bit, both the overdrive (channel 1) and clean (channel 2). You won't even think about the peavey or the fender.
