Peavey Classic 30 Question

Why is it the the Peavey Classic 30 uses 4 power tubes when almost every other combo amp in it`s range uses 2 power tubes. Can you pull the 2 outside power tubes in the Peavey and knock the watts down like a lot of people do with heads running power tubes. If so what does that do to the impendence , I pretty sure a the stock speaker is 16 ohm.

Unless I'm losing my mind, it's 2 EL84's and 4 12AX7's.

Guess I'd know for sure if I got of my back and retubed mine.

I was under the impression that EL84s are less powerful than 6L6s and EL34s.

And yes, you could pull two of the tubes. In my experience it doesn't do wonders for the tone, but it's not going to make the amp blow up.

Edit: OK, I lied about pulling the power tubes. Don't do it! :smack:

I've never figured why they used 4 EL84s :smack: An no, you can't pull the outer two out because there wired in series.

They have 4 EL 84's and 3 12ax7's.... I am in the middle of saving to retube my 30....

Isnt it 3 EL84's, 1 12AX7(Poweramp driver), and 3 12ax7's in the preamp?

I modded the freakin crap out of my C30, so I'm pretty well acquainted with it. There are 3 preamp 12ax7s. 2 of them are for gain(it isn't really a 2 channel amp, it just adds gain stages) and 1 12ax7 driver tube that goes to 4 EL84 power tubes. I'll have to look into the pulling tubes thing...if I recall correctly the power for the 4 tubes is in series, so if one tube is missing none of them will get power (like old christmas tree lights). If you were to rewire the power pins for the tube sockets you could probably remedy this...

It has a channel switch, but it isn't really 2 channels. It is splitting hairs from the users perspective, but the 2nd gain tube is just added to the stages of the 1st tube for more gain. This is different than 2 discrete channels.

So most 2 channel amps aren't 2 channel then?
The 6505 isn't 2 channel?

I'm not familiar with the circuit on the 6505, but some amps will have different circuits for each channel with dedicated components. Those are really 2 channels. Amps like the Peavey Classic series have a channel switch that just adds gain. It is kinda of pedantic for this thread which is why my inital comment was paranthetical, but it is a different kind of design.

Yup, and with that crappy transformer you'll fry the crap out of it at 8ohms. Upgrading the transformer would be a big improvement on this amp. I've considered doing it several times, though I'm more likely to build an amp from scratch at this point.
