Peavey Classic 30?

I was thinking about getting one . I really like my Soldano Atomic 16 but the Classic 30 has reverb, effects loop and 30 watts which is all I really need. I would be using a pedal for OD and I heard the cleans are really nice. Is the internal speaker 16ohms?

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

i dont know. i hear the cleans are very good, though.

how is the atomic 16? i was thinking about getting an astroverb (an atomic 16 w/ reverb)

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

imo, i feel that the cleans on this amp are equal to fenders. the reverb is the most amazing reverb ive ever heard, goes from suttle to pink floyd type stuff to crazy where u can barely tell the notes. the crunch is great and with humbuckers it sounds a lot like marshall stuff, imo.

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

on my amp hunt, it came down to this and the peavey envoy 110. I went with the envoy, but only because the classic 30 needs a little go juice before it starts sounding rawkin', and I want to be able to practice at lower volumes because of location (can't crank anything in a dorm during quiet hours). For that reason only did the classic 30 defeat the envoy in my book, but it's just something you might want to consider.

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

The internal speaker is 16 ohms, and the ext cab jack needs 16 ohms as well. I have one, and it's a great amp. I was looking at Atomic 16/Astroverb when I ran into reviews about the PC 30, and it's been great so far. With Groove Tubes and high output humbuckers, it had a killer distortion. I've since changed to JJ tubes, swapped pickups in my Les Paul to Seth Lover bridge and Antiquity neck. The clean is beautiful, the drive is great for blues, and there's some good ol rock crunch like ZZ and ACDC. I kinda miss the distorion with the old tubes and pickups, but the sound is so much creamy and glassy at the same time, and like you said, there are pedals for the higher gain stuff.

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

I have a Classic 30 and feel it's an underrated amp. I did a few "mod's" without actually tearing it apart and IMHO I think it sounds pretty good. First thing to do is to get the speaker out of the cabinet ASAP and put it into a seperate enclosure. I did this for two reasons. 1) the tubes will last a hell of a lot longer. 2) the tone comes across much better and bigger. I made a cabinet app. the same size as the Classic 30's cabinet with 1/3 of the back open. I tried it with the back totally closed and to my ears it sounds much better with 1/3 of it open. Speaker choice is a matter of taste. I've tried the stock Blue Marvel, Celestion Greenback, Eminance Legend V12, Celestion Silver Series and have settled on a 30 watt ceramic Weber Blue Dog. To my ears it's definatley the smoothest of the bunch. As far as tubes I'm using JJ EL84's (#35 heat rating), a Sovtek 5751 in V1, an EH 12AX7LPS in V2 and a Balanced JJ ECC83S in V3. I've found that by using a lesser gained tube in V1 gives you more clean headroom and helps to calm down the OD channel somewhat. Again, once you season it to taste I feel it's a great bang for the buck amp. Hope this helped you.

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

Thanks for all the info , when running the Classic 30 into a speaker cabinet does the internal speaker in the Classic 30 shut off , I know the Peavey Classic 20 speaker shuts off when running into a cab.

ive never done it, but i dont believe so.

Re: Peavey Classic 30?

Nope. Runs them both. By running the extension jack, it switches automatically to the 8 ohm tap. Internal 16 plus extension 16 in parallel makes 8 Ohms.

I don`t want to sound dumb but does that mean I could run it safely with my 16ohm cab?
