Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

One of the regular vendors at my local favorite flea-market, has one of these for $150. (I think I can snag it for $100.) Its rough, but works. I'm thinking this might be a cool power amp for either my Johnson J-Station or Pod 2.0, or both. He's a good guy who would allow me to return it if it had any "issues".

Is this a nice amp? I have the skills to refresh and/or repair any electronic issues. I'm just wondering if its a decent unit otherwise. I bet this would be cool driving the Eminence Gentle Jazz speaker set. (One speaker per channel.)

What say yee? :33:

I ran one for a while with a couple different preamp rack units they are nice amps. Don't know about running some thing like a POD or J Station with one though as these will color your sound ( which is what you WANT if running some thing like a Peavy Rock Master , Marshall JMP-1 and the like).

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

Thanks Ascension. And yeah, I'm not worried about "coloring" the sound. As you say, thats the primary function of the J/Pod units. Although, both units have "uncolored" modes. The Pod has the tube pre-amp preset, and the JS has the ability to bypass the amp/cab section.

The more I read about this amp, the more inclined I am to snag it.

If it sounds like the combo amps, do it!

Classic 50-410, I won't sell unless I need a kidney.

See, . . . thats the part I don't know. I haven't heard this amp, am I'm only vaguely familiar with the Peavey Classic 30/50 combo amps.

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

I don't think the power amp line has anything to do with the Classic 20/30/50/100 amps.
I've found that Peavey likes to use the word "classic" a lot in their marketing.
Definitely get it.
If you find you don't like it, you could eBay it for much more than you put into it.
I recently did the same thing but with my old Digitech GNX3 and a Carvin T100.
Run into a pair of 212s with Celestion Classic Lead 80's and it just roars.
Stere -ere- o.

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

I have not used one of the Peavey stereo power amps, but I can say that they were regarded very highly on the old Harmony-Central rack forums. The Classic 50/50 was pretty much considered a great basic power amp unit, often recommended if someone didn't have the funds or desire to get a Mesa or VHT stereo power section.

Hopefully that helps steer you one way or another!

Yeah, I guess I'm going to do it. I was just curious to see if anyone said . . . no, no, no, . . . run away. ;)

Maybe.

A Marshall JMP-1 would sound awesome with that power amp nice suggestion.

I'll have to "google" JMP-1.

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

I had one of those for a while. Nice tone, very reliable. I ran a Boss GX-700 rack mount processor through it to warm up the sound and power a stereo 4x12 cab with very good results. The amp itself is very durable. $100 is a great value if the issues are mostly cosmetic.

Re: Peavey Classic 50/50 tube rack mount power amp. Should I pull the trigger?

. . . if the issues are mostly cosmetic . . . is the million dollar question. I'll know tomorrow. I think I'm going to do this.

The Rev BFG swears by the JMP-1.
Can't go wrong there.
