Peavey Pirahna and Orange Micro Dark

Anyone had a chance to try these side by side, or even have played both? Comparisons?

I've only seen utube videos of each so I'm reserving my thoughts until I can try them in real life.

Anyone tried the Pirahna yet?? Saw one at GC the other day, but ran out of time to try it

Re: Peavey Pirahna and Orange Micro Dark

Honestly the pirahna sounded a bit compressed and **** to me and that's coming from a guy who loves high gain metal amps in general. I'd go orange because of the sound and the whole 4 ohm thing

Re: Peavey Pirahna and Orange Micro Dark

Yeh the Piranha sounds very solid state to me.

Re: Peavey Pirahna and Orange Micro Dark

I've tried the Piranha. It's not bad, definitely a viable cheap route to passable high gain. It's by no means as rich sounding as a proper 6505, but that's to be expected.

The main weakness of the Piranha is the lack of tone shaping options. The EQ knob really only changes the midrange character, from scooped to throaty.

I tried a bright-sounding guitar through the Piranha and found myself really wanting to dial down treble. I suppose B/M/T controls aren't in the cards for such a small form factor, but I didn't have much confidence in the core voicing of the Piranha.

This is what I was kind of expecting... Thanks

Sorry I should have clarified that I was judging by the clips not by experience.

FWIW, I've seen loads of Micro Terror/Dark vids where the player was to able coax a good feel out the amp over a wide range of tones but with the Piranha the clips were flat and two dimensional.

no. still cant see it.. Its blocked here at work.. will check from home tomm

Re: Peavey Pirahna and Orange Micro Dark

During that video, Lee never turns the Peavey's shape control up to the boosted mids side, so it always sounds thin and crappy. If he'd spent some time on the other side of the dial, it might have made a better impression.

pretty sorry if they dont give an adequate demo. if its a dealer, youd think they would do whatever possible to sell em..

I haven't tried the Piranah, but the Micro Dark is great for what it is. I actually use it for band practice. Surisingly, I've been able to get a decent cleanish, edge of breakup tone with it.

I use mine for practice, too, as well as having used it for a few shows. It really does do a good warm, edgy sound with the volume high and gain below noon. Plus, with the volume and gain around 2 o'clock, you get a great, loud lead tone without a pedal.

Every time I use that amp, I'm floored by a new tone I discover.

The other night I did some tube rolling, and found the best combination of gain, low noise, and clarity with one of my Telefunken tubes from the '70s. It just sings now.
