Peavey Predator Project

Re: Peavey Predator Project

I think I would prefer the JB over the Screamin' Demon since I have had much more hands on experience with the JB, I also see it recommended over a Demon a lot as well. (Though tone is always a subjective thing) I keep reading that the Demon lacks gain for those really high gain tones.

Then again, you are right about the volume issues between the Fat 50 and a JB. To me, the stock JB also sounds a bit mushy/flabby with lower tunings. So I'm not sure if that is the pickup as well for this guitar, eventhough I love JB's!
Choosing new pickups is always difficult, since you never exactly know what tone you're going to get!

Yeah we are definitely dealing with a different market, which sucks! :P Oh well, The search continues I guess.

From my experience, the JB can handle anything you throw at it gain wise, and it still cuts through the mix. I love the Screamin Demon because it cleans up so well without being a tad harsh like the JB can be (IMO.) Also, the Screamin Demon handles lower volume levels than anyother pickup I have tried.

I personally wouldn't worry about the volume issue between the Fat 50's and JB, I have a Walnut San Dimas with a Dimebucker in the bridge and a Screamin Demon in the neck, significant output difference but some height adjustments made it a non-issue.

I would say throw a JB in and give it go, awesome thing about pickups, you can always change 'em :)

And that stinks about the market differences, here in Atlanta seems like everyone on CL has inflated prices for trade but if you offer cash they will take a nice cut.

Best of luck with the search!

The JB definitely is a great workhorse! If I still don't like the stock JB in the Peavey, I can always do a magswap, as I did with the JB in my Mayones, which has an A8 mag.
Anyway, thank you kindly for your time, I appreciate it!

Absolutely! And a mag swap would definitely be a great option if it doesn't sound quite right. Best of luck with the project, look forward to hearing how it ends up!

I'll keep you updated, I'll post a sample someday soon! Thanks again!

Re: Peavey Predator Project

EDIT: Could you show me your Predators? I'm very curious to see what's so different :P

Sure. But I slightly miss-spoke. I have one Predator, and four Patriots. The only difference between the Patriots and "my" Predator, is the pickups, locking nut, and Kahler Flyer trem.

Here's the Predator: (Internet pic. Mine is identical.)

Here's mine. Same thing . . . blurry pic: :)

Here's what a Patriot looks like:

Slightly different headstock. Identical body and pickguard. (I have 4 of these. Love every one.) ;)

Nice collection! I have recently discovered, and begun upgrading/restoring my '88 Patriot... I've had it in my Parts bin over 5 years without realizing what I had. My friend had given it to me, minus tuners and saddles. Added a set of Fender Saddles, Schaller DaVinci tuners, revealed the proverbial dream guitar... Turns out it has the best playability of any guitar I've owned in 25 years, nearly Ever! Amazing neck!

My Patriot is laid out differently than all of yours: Vintage Strat style Tremolo, No Pickguard, rear access control cavity, was single Humbucker, and Volume Knob.
I've upgraded wiring to US spec PRS 5 way Rotary style electronics, and routed for neck pickup. Refinishing the SunFire red body, is on the to do list, to be completed after adding custom shop wound hybrid pickups.
I love the Patriot, and I intend to collect at least one of every color/configuration Peavey Patriot built in Meridian...

Re: Peavey Predator Project

Love your restoration of the Predator. Very nice job, great upgrades, as well... That color is awesome, with the added metal flake...
