Sorry, I've never heard of a Royal 8. Could it be an export only? You can contact mbrown@peavey.com , His name is mike brown and he is extremely helpful. If he can't tell you what you need to know, then you don't need to know.....lol

I've been looking at them lately but haven't had a chance to try one. They seem interesting enough, same league as the epi valve junior, blackheart lil' giant, crate v5, etc...

Re: Peavey Royal 8 anyone?

I have just wanted to hear from others too. I will probably buy it, regardless what anyone thinks. As said for 100 dollars it cant hurt.

Just want to see if there are any owners here, who knows I might get some advice (tubes, speakers, pedals that work with it, mods etc.).

Re: Peavey Royal 8 anyone?

Strange coincidence......I've been eyeballing this amp as well. I don't own an outboard reverb, so I'd have to add that to the mix, although it doesn't have an FX loop, so it would have to be before the preamp.

Regarding it's raw tone: Wow. It was warm and rumbling, and I didn't even take the volume higher than 2. It reminds a little bit of that warm-yet-not-wimpy "Women and Children First" album tone. The only thing I couldn't quite come to grips with was the loose bottom string, but that could've been the guitar.

I've heard great things about the MI Audio Crunch Box, and I have to wonder how that would sound in front of this amp.

I can tell you this: when playing those 3 and 4-note chords from "Running With The Devil" or "Dance The Night Away", the amp is absolutely warm & alive. The notes aren't searing, nor are they like lasers, but rather like burning, rumbling magma from a volcano. YOU have to bring aggression to the table, either via your right hand attack, your pickups, or a combination of both. I wish I could've fiddled with this amp longer.

Re: Peavey Royal 8 anyone?

I think that I'd like to investigate Peavey's Windsor Studio combo amp, which has EQ knobs, more gain, an FX loop, a larger speaker, and an onboard Power Sponge.

I can't find a store that stocks one without ordering it.

I have to believe, and maybe I'm wrong, that the Royal 8's warm, rumbling tone is from the amp's lone power tube struggling to keep up. The Windsor Studio also only has one power tube, yet also has the Power Sponge. Different price range, of course.

Whats even more strange is that I was also thinking about pairing up the crunch box with the royal 8... :D

Do you think it is sutible for some hard blues tones? I havent tried it and dont know if I will be able to, my local music store has never any cool things in stock..
