Peavey "T" Series guitars?

I was at a local pawn shop today and saw a groovy looking Peavey T-15 hanging on the wall.

I picked it up and plucked around for awhile and was fairly impressed. The strings were too thick and the action was horrible (re: needs a setup!) but it was very, very comfortable beneath my fingers. It's a pretty good price, the guitar has a lot of mojo, and just plain looks cool...

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with the Peavey T-series of guitars and whether or not it's worth the pennies?

Yeah, those are very cool guitars if you can get it for a good price.

Made in America 80s and 90s Peavey guitars are good and go for cheap these days (except for the Wolfgang, of course). Probably some of the best deals around if you're looking for a nice reliable player to have around. I'd say get it, if the price is right. What was the price on it?

Re: Peavey "T" Series guitars?

Peavey T series guitars are great, well made instruments. I've never played one with a neck I didn't like (probably because they're all cut by machine and extremely uniform).
I had a T-60 once that I got for $160. I traded it for something I wanted more, but I wish I still had it sometimes.
These guitars were not cool in the 80's because they didin't have the look. But they have stood the test of time better than a lot of the cheesy gear that was made in the70's.

i LOVE their T40 basses...the T60 is the same thing in a six-string configuration. Those pickups with the big gnarly rails get a killer tone, and for the price they can be had at, it's hard to beat.

I was thinking of tuning it to D and sludging the crap out of it!

You might want to consider going the opposite direction with that tuning. The T-15 is only a 23" scale length. I was thinking of getting one and up-tuning. Would make a nice lead instrument.

As soon as I wrote the post I thought about it and figured, yeah, the short scale is no good for down tuning...so I retract the previous statement. But, mean, I'm seriously thinking of snatching it up...

Re: Peavey "T" Series guitars?

i actually prefer shorter scales for lower tunings. my SG tuned to C# sounds a lot thicker and heavier than my sister's baritone, which is a whole octave lower than standard. just get some heavier strings for it, you'll be fine.

I think those are the ones I'm familiar with.

Heavy as all git out...

Re: Peavey "T" Series guitars?

yeah that's the one thing i didn't like was the weight on my friend's T40. It made for good tone tho, and you gotta remember it's from the 70's when people thought heavier = better tone.

seriously hard to beat for the price and the tone. Made in the USA, great-sounding and totally unique pickups, quality woods...wonder if my friend's still got his laying around, maybe he wants to sell it.

Re: Peavey "T" Series guitars?

Bah, upon much closer inspection there was a HUGE chunk taken out of one of the frets, there was tons of fret wear, and the upon even closer inspection the neck was a nicked and scratched to high heaven.

It was a good buy, but there was too much wrong with the neck that I couldn't justify getting it. It did inspire me to search for more on ebay though....Peavey T's here I come!

...ha. "Peavey T's" sounds like "BVD's"...
