Any one modded this peice of crap for tubes/speaker?
I find myself going back to my bandit 112 w/ shefield smoother and just plain sounds better to me. Any help very appricieated!!!
I need to try something else before I trade it for a marshall s/s

Re: Peavey valveking 112

Don't trade it for a solid state marshall, trade it for a valve jr. half stack.

valve juinor that might be the ticket considering i have wood floors and neighbors. And i really like a cranked tube amp My valve king has no tone and is way!!!! too loud and my bandit is messed up Its way too loud on 1 (like its on 5 ) need to fix it.

Re: Peavey valveking 112

I have a ValveKing VK112. I have not done any mods, but I am considering a few. Mercury Magnetics offers upgraded output transformers and chokes for the ValveKing. Not a minor mod, but I've heard a tranny upgrade can make a world of difference. Looking inside my own VK112, it doesn't look difficult at all to swap the speaker, so that's another possibility. Another, simpler and cheaper mod, and probably the first I'll be trying is a tube swap. Since the gain on the VK112 is meh, I doubt a tube swap could make it any worse, so there's not much to loose besides money spent on a set of tubes that'll probably make a difference in another amp if they don't do so in the ValveKing

Yeah man, that little amp is really sweet for practice and whatnot. It can still piss off your neighbors if you want it to but it offers plenty of tubey goodness at low volumes too. You can get the tubes cookin, stick an OD and a fuzz in front of it and treat it like a full stack and just barely be drowning out your TV.

I m thinking of selling/trading mine as I really dont like it. Im afaid that i'll spend lots of money trying to make it sound like i think it should when it prob wont.
is a valveking with mods just a differntly voiced valveking? to much fizz not enough tone!!clean is nice though!...reverb sucks!!!

Re: Peavey valveking 112

I agree, the clean tone is great, distortion is meh, *especially* with high gain pickups. I've not modded my ValveKing, so I cannot speak to how much the voicing is change by mods. You do have a point of trading the ValveKing for another amp instead of spending a bunch of money to change around something you aren't satisfied with, and that would probably be the better idea. Conversely, I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to unload my ValveKing (I've tried), so I figure I'll keep it and use it as an inexpensive platform for tinkering, experimentation and the testing of modifications.

I might mod mine as well. I like the idea of a tube amp, but i think i should have spent 150 more and got a fender hotrod deluxe....****

Re: Peavey valveking 112

I've played through a Valveking 112 on several occassions, and own a Randall RG75 hybrid. I like the Randall better.

If you've got Kustoms in your area, their newer high voltage hybrid line looks interesting.

Re: Peavey valveking 112

Had one for a year or so. Changing the tubes to JJ tubes will improve it quite a bit. Gets rid of the fizzy distortion. Nothing you can do about the crappy reverb unless you want to buy a better reverb tank. I tried all kind of tube combinations to improve reverb, nothing helped. I tried replacing the speaker with a celestion, but it didn't make enough difference to leave it in. If you don't like it after the tube change, sell it. You can't polish a turd. My opinion only, but trading it for a Marshall solid state would be trading DOWN.

I traded mine for a used Peavey Classic 30, and like it much better

I might go that route. I just kills me that i bought a tube amp only to have my bandit transtube eat it for lunch! hows the gain on th classic 30?
i actually need a bit less volume. wood floors and neighbors, man

Re: Peavey valveking 112

The gain channel on the Classic 30 is not quite as tight, nor does it have as much gain on tap, but with a pedal in front of the clean channel, it sounds fantastic. I use a Marshall Jackhammer pedal and get a very good JCM800 crunch. You'll be surprised how much more kick the classic 30 has even though it is lower wattage.

Re: Peavey valveking 112

If you are looking for good tone at low volumes, you can't beat one of the Vox Modeling amps. The AD60vtx (blueface) amps that were the top of the line models have been discontinued, and I got one off Ebay for 230.00 a while back. Thats a great deal for all that amp can do, and it can do it at whisper volume!

You are a lot younger than me, obviously have been playing decades less time than I, with most probably a lot less exposure to real vintage tube amps than I've had. But, appreciate what you have. The grass is NOT always truly greener on the other side of the fence. My very first amp was a 25-watt 1956 St. George tube amp. Over the years, I've played dozens of excellent Fender tube amps, including blackface Deluxe Reverb, Bandmaster, Vibrolux Reverb, Dual Showman with JBL speakers, Twin Reverb, you-name-it.

Precious few of the solid state amps I've ever played, impressed me as being any better than a steaming pile of dog****, and that includes the Marshall solid-state. A total lump of crap!

I play professionally, and have a surf-music band with two other very pro-class players. We all have had extensive gigging and recording experience, and we all hold our tone as one of our top priorities. The VK112 is one of my favorite amps of all time. Not as good as my old '65 Deluxe Reverb, but, the Deluxe was no good at an outdoor venue unless it was miked and played through a powerful PA system. The VK112 has enough volume to cut through the mix, and handle a lot of gigs that lesser amps couldn't deal with. With an extension speaker, it really screams. The reverb on this amp is adequate for some playing, but not for all-out surf music. The Boss FRV-1 gives me all the splash I need for those wet glssandoes and vibrato-picking ala Misirlou. For under $200 used, this is one of the best amp buys of my entire life!

I am fussy about my sound - I used to take my Showman and Twin Reverb to Myles Rose at Groove Tubes, to retube and re-bias them for optimal tone. (FYI, Myles is the guy that Dick Dale's amp tech used to call for advice on how to tune Dale's amps to get specific tones out of them.) The VK112 features automatic rebias, which saves me a ****load of time and money whenever replacing tubes. The JJ tubes in the power and pre-amp sections are excellent, and were very highly spoken of by Myles at Groove Tubes. The speaker is better quality with more pump than the standard Utah and Jensen speakers that used to be standard equipment in Fender amps back in the day. In fact, I believe the only way to really significantly upgrade the existing VK speaker would be with either a JBL or EV speaker. That would be an upgrade in virtually ANY stock combo amp.

There's a very good reason why the average rating given the VK112 at Harmony Central, and Ultimate Guitar, is between 4.5 and 5 stars. The amp really is that good. I've had enough experience playing the best tube amps Fender ever produced, to appreciate the incredible value Peavey has built into the VK series.

Re: Peavey valveking 112

Those valve kings are great amps , so I don't know why you don't like it. Peavey makes some great sounding tube amps at a decent price pal. If you're not please with the sound that you're getting , chances are it could be you're not adjusting the EQ on the amp properly or you could be playing a low budget guitar ? I don't know . Have you considered getting a effects processor to spice up your sound with the amp ? I have a 1989 Peavey Bandit 112 Solo Series which I use a Digitech RP-50 with and it sounds great with it.
