Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

so i have two amp right now.......

1. peavey valveking 112
2. marshall mg 15

I love my little marshall, and my VK is just.......ok. It doesnt really have that classic rock sound like my MG. So im thinking, should i trade in my VK for a marshall MG 250 or 100 halfstack? I have trouble getting the tones i want from the VK and not at all with the MG since most of my idols play marshalls like: slash, angus young, EVH (used to), and mick marsh.

Is it worth it? i have heard people having trouble with the bigger MG models

if you're going to stick with Marshall, look for a used Marshall Valvestate halfstack or combo (not AVT). you'll be happier.

this one is a little bit overpriced but it's just an example:

add an Avatar 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s and you can have a gig-ready setup for $600 or less

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

Well if you like your MG more than your VK you could do it if you need the extra headroom of the bigger models. I'd also expect the MG heads to sound much better with good cabinets.

But what I'd personally do is keep the VK until you've saved up enough money to get a real tube Marshall or similar.

Still having trouble with that VK combo? Have you tried a new speaker, and getting rid of the godawful Ruby Tubes? If so, you may want to get another 112 cabinet to go with it. I have the VK head into an Avatar Vintage 212 with V30's, and it's all rock & roll. It kills. Good luck though man, I'm sure your solution is out there somewhere.

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

the mg series seems to be one of those that if you dig it, you shoot for a combo. if the mg does what you want it to do, just rock that little guy and sell the vk. if you need a loud amp for practices, I'd look into a peavey windsor, which are supposed to be very jcm eight hundredy (but don't quote me on that).

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

You'll be happier in the long run with something like that VK. What you may be happier doing what Dankstar said and get a windsor combo. Sell both of those amps, and that should get you close to be able to buy one.

I didn't like the VK that much when i tried one. Buzzy and Harsh. Maybe a new speaker? It could be costly to just go out a try speakers though. Maybe try one and send it back if you don't like it.

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

my valve king has a celestion loaded cab so it sounds decent. i personally didnt like the mg. i opted to buy a line 6 spider II half stack over the marshall. the mg was too noisy. i like the valveking but for me its only a temporary tube amp till i can save up enought to get a mesa boogie. until then im rocking the valveking.

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

I've been using an MG half stack at rehearsals as that's what is provided. These amps are not really my thing so I use only the clean channel with the crunch engaged, the gain on about 1 and an overdrive pedal for leads. Played through the dedicated cab they sound pretty bad to me but some of them are set up on older style better quality Marshall cabs and the difference is pretty astonishing. If you do get the MG head it's definitely worth saving for a better quality cab. Then, if you ever go for a tube head you'll already have a decent cab. The MG cabs really are very poor.

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

The reason i want to go with the MG is because that is a marshall i can go with without blowing $1400. A local music store by my house has a marshall DSL400 (i think that's the model number) for sale for like $1100 and i could probably get the guy to give it to me for like $800 since it's been there for a LONG TIME. Or i could just get a cab and plug my VK into it and crank it!

what's you budget? a JCM 800 combo can be had for under $1000 and that will nail the 80s tones you've chasing after (the 4210 will do it without pedals or at most a TS-type boost). so why settle?

and if it's a DSL 401, you can do better. Not a good amp for 80s metal anyways

ya thats it....its the DSL 401 model. What's wrong with that model?

as for the dudget, due to the fact that im a college student right now, i am going to have to wait till the summer to work and make money. So ya i would say its right around $800-$1000 range. Man i would kill for a JCM 800! i have no need for a half stack because im mainly a bed room and some times small gig player, so i combo would be great!

ok then - hold on to the VK or the MG until summer - sell one of them now and put the money in the bank if you want.

once you start working, buy a JCM800 combo, plug in your Baretta, and rock the hell out. don't waste money on another amp just to have something better for only 4 months.

DSL 401 can sound good with some small mods. they had some reliability issues. they're also an EL84-powered amp and have a different vibe than the 50 or 100W Marshalls (DSL/TSL 50 or 100). I just don't see a 401 being the best thing for the tones you want.

are they still making the JCM800 combos? or would i have to find one used?

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

If you're on a budget look in the used market. They do have reissue JCM 800's but they are super expensive and I don't think they make a combo anymore but I see used ones pop up all the time. THey are extremely loud so you probably only want a 50 watt combo. Also looking into Laney AOR's and if you want a head GH 50L, they are very vintage marshall sounding, very similar to an 800 and can be found quite cheap used

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

Bad tone vs. Good tone. Trust me. You like 80's metal, wait and get a used JCM 800. Look for the 4205 or 4210(channel switcher) and that is all you will need.

I actually think the single channel ones sound better but that's just me. Either way with a DSL you can get pretty believeable 800 tone but you really have to crank the crunch channel, and maybe put an OD in front of it. You have to keep in mind that if you're thinking about metal tone with an 800 a lot of those dudes hot rodded their 800's. I think the GH 50L comes closest to a hot rodded 800 that I've ever heard, they are pretty killer amps

nah not thinking about metal tones. The three things I play are: blues (john lee hooker.....), classic rock (ac/dc, zeppelin.....) and hard rock (GNR, Van Halen, Motley Crue, RATT.....) pretty much 70's and 80's stuff.

Re: Peavey VK or Marshall MG 100 half stack?

another option i could do is buy a marshall pedal and run it through my VK. ive been looking at the marshall guv'nor and jackhammer pedals. which would be a hot rodded jcm800 sound? the guv'nor or the jackhammer?
