Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

So with the purchases I've made, I have to liquidate a few things to finance them. I posted my Peavey Windsor on Craigslist and when I took all the pics, I plugged it into my Greenback cabinet just to test it out. The thing sounded great. I mean, it cranked. I never got a tone like that from it before, so full of balls and bite. I plugged in that Agile Hawker I just got and tweaked the knobs a little--no boxes, no nothing. I mean, I liked the way it sounded before for one or two things, but I guess I just never hit the right knob settings. I can get this tone from either of my other amps, so I'm still going to sell it, but my new thoughts on this amp are it is killer for that late 70s, early 80s Marshall amp sound. Not hot rodded JCM 800, but close to a stock amp. Still a little thin on solos like the real thing but a good stomp would cure those ills. Still, just a really fun amp.

Re: Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

I sold an Orange OR15 to a family member so that I could pay my rent one month a few months ago, work was slow and I was sitting on gear that was awesome but too loud for my apartment.
Sold my Am. Std. strat to a different family member to pay the bills for the next month after that. Boy those were rough times. I ate a lot of ramen during that period.

Times are good again and I'm buying the OR15 back today. I'm excited! It's like I pawned it but without interest.

More than a few times I've traded gear to get a taste of something different or to recoup cash during financial instability and I've probably owned 20 guitars and 10 amps in 12 years of playing and every now and then I say dang I sure do miss that one guitar.
I had a Les Paul studio faded that makes me go WTF? I should have kept that. It wasn't stellar but it was an all-around good guitar and now I don't have anything with humbuckers and it drives me crazy sometimes.

I'm the same way. There are a few things I don't miss (my cheap Ibby Talman electric, my DigiTech stuff, my Crybaby), there's a lot of things I do miss (my Lonestar, my Tele FMT HH, my EHX DMM, my 70's Dyna Comp, Vox V848, my first strat, and my Alvarez RD20 Electric Acoustic just to name a few).

There was only one trade that I've ever made that came out OK; my 89 MIA Strat Plus with the DG-20 set. I loved that guitar, but I was playing my Tele far more at the time and I traded it for an Epiphone Masterbilt AJ50. While I loved the Strat and miss it from time to time, That AJ50 has been an amazing guitar for the money. Whenever I go to a picking circle, it floors everything in the room assuming someone didn't bring a Collings or some other boutiquey thing.

Meh its a Peavey Windsor... you can buy another one cheap and easy. Its not rare nor likely to increase in value

Re: Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

I've been trying to pick one up for the past few weeks, I found a few on Flea Bay but they were all local pick up only. I even offered a guy a extra $100 because his price was so good but he wouldn't go for it. I guess he already had a local buyer & didn't want to deal with the hassle of putting it in a box or something??? I'm sure I'll come across one sooner or later, like Mr. Crusher said they're not exactly rare or collectable in any way???

The one thing I really miss about living in a big city or even just a relatively metropolitan area is the lack of big music stores! The closest thing to me is a hour away & it's awful! He knows he's the only game around for 150 miles so his prices are ridiculous & his selection sucks! Plus he's the angriest hippie ever!!! Every single time I've bought a guitar there I felt like the guy in those razor commercials where the dude almost gets a beat down for asking them to open the case? Alas, I'm stuck with internet shopping, & with valve amps we all know that can sometimes be hit or miss???

As always the voice of reason, lol. I've thought about that and the fact is, once its gone, I think it'll be gone for good. This amp needs to be pretty loud to sound good, and I just can't do that in my house. Never gonna use if with the band, so....

Re: Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

After browsing the other Windsor thread and hearing the potential it has, I'd be inclined to attenuate it and crank it up. It has some great sound on some of those clips.

It's always hard for me to part with a nice piece of gear, whether it's a one trick pony or something I got a good deal on. I recently sold my marshall jtm30, but only once I was good and ready. It was a nice amp for certain things but I found myself playing through other stuff a lot more. It too needed to be loud to really do its trick - an attribute I don't quite like these days.

In person, it is impressive. I found it a hard amp to dial in, and pretty finicky as far as what speakers it likes, but once it came together, it was very impressive. Brought a smile to my face kind of sound. Also changed one of the preamp tubes in the front of the amp to a GT12AX7-M because something was cutting in and out. Trial and error tube swapping fixed that, and the tone was a little better for it. This may also have been one of my initial problems. But yeah, I think attenuated, you would have something there and for not much money.

Re: Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

As we discussed it in the other thread, the Windsor is a great amp. It sounds and feels no better no worse than any classic amp. I compared it side buy side with 100W Marshall heads (JCM 2000 DSL 100 and JVM) and I liked the Windsor better. Those Marshalls are different beasts completely but still, that's saying a lot. The Windsor is not a meh buy any stretch of imagination. One just should know what to do with it. It is not a JCM 800 clone but it is just as good if not better. This amp is optimized for power amp distortion which is a great stuff. Can't resist the temptation to post this clip here:

I've seen this, and not only is this guy a smokin' player, but it shows just how good this amp can sound. Like you said, not meh at all. If I didn't have to have a channel switcher, I'd definitely use this on stage, and I'm hoping to get at least one or two recordings off it before I sell it. As I expected, I'm not getting any bites off Craigslist, because this amp gets such a bad rap. I don't mind. Not in any kind of hurry to sell, lol.

Re: Peavey Windsor...seller's remorse???

Yes, that's your personal business, but selling a nice 4 EL34 amp with an FX loop for $200??? That's almost as much as a set of tubes for it goes for. I do not think you can sell it. I would rather term it as "giving away".

Also, try using a 12AU7 for PI. This will make it about 40% less loud (I mean actual perception of loudness) and much easier to get that beautiful power tube distortion. Try playing it with this tube and a good overdrive pedal. I am using a Fulltone Plimsoul (not an overdrive exactly) and the sounds I am getting are out of this world.

I hear ya about missing "that one guitar". Back in 2001 I wound up pawning off most of my valuables due to losing my ass at farming and a general string of bad luck. But there is that one guitar I'd love to have back, the one in my sig line.
