hi everyone. this is my first post but i have been lurking here for a long while. you guys are a wealth of great information! here's my question. about 10 years ago i bought a used peavy classic 50w VT series tube amp. my guitar teacher recommended it. i'm just trying to find some info about it out of curiosity. but when i do searches i only get back info on the classic series, not the classic VT series. my amp has 2 tubes (no idea what kind) and what looks like 2 10" (maybe 12") speakers. it also comes with this cool pedalboard which allows you to to get a phaser effect along with some others. i have a picture on my webpage (url listed below) under the "gear" section. i was just wondering what year it was made, if anyone else played it before, what your thoughts were on it, what is with the "VT" designation, etc. i haven't used it much but am finding it sounds pretty good with my bass. so i have been experimenting with it lately. still don't use it much for electric guitar as the pod is more practical for a variety of reasons. but i have a feeling i will be messing with it on 6 string soon. thanks for the help!

Re: Peavy Classic 50 VT series?

Isn't that the amp with a solid state preamp and tube poweramp? I imagine the tubes are EL84s.

Mine is a '79 or an '80, I like the clean channel but the distortion's not too hot, I use a Boss overdrive for that.
I may have a PDF of the owners manual if you're interested.

Solid state preamp with 6L6's for the power tubes. Funky phaser and bad distortion. They sound okay clean though, you should try routing your POD through it and see what happens.Nice PBass!

Re: Peavy Classic 50 VT series?

thanks for the info! i'm thinking i may replace the tubes. it's probably time. it's good that i know what the heck they are now!
and saladin, thanks for the comments on the bass. i just got it setup and a new set of thomastik flatwounds on it. i haven't tried the guitar pod thru it yet but will definitely be doing some more experimentation. with the bass i've been plugging straight in and using the cool phaser effects as well as the non-effected sound. i knew this group would come thru for me :)

Re: Peavy Classic 50 VT series?

Try the smaller 6L6 tubes such as the ones made by SovTek-- the larger tubes have no real crunch or sparkle in the VT series. I use a Peavey Deuce made in 1978 outfitted with older more compact 6L6 tubes made in West Germany (when there was a West ...) and Celestion G12M-70 speakers wired at 8 ohms. Actually, any speaker than those stock Peavey speakers (including Scorpions and Black Widows) will be an improvement.
