Pedal as preamp?

Re: Pedal as preamp?

It can be connected but such pedal should have enough EQ tweak ability considering you are skipping your amps preamp circuit and eq stage that already shape the sound a lot, maybe a graphic EQ could be handy. Not sure why you wanna do this but also keep in mind there are actual amp-like preamp circuits in a pedal format from different vendors like AMT, ISP Technologies, Mooer has some affordable preamps too (I have not tried them), Diezel and even Carvin has reincarnated their defunct amp line into preamps in pedal format.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

If I was going to do it I would pick a pedal that is designed to be used as a preamp. I have a couple of the AMT 2 series laying around that sound great run that way.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

Single preamp pedals are amazing. I became an AMT guy (hey devastone :) ) but there are so many working solutions voiced for power amp or DI injection.

If you have 2 amps with FX loops, you can theoretically (works with some, not all) take the FX loop send (preamp signal) from the 1st amp and put it into the FX loop return (to power amp) of the 2nd amp.

Maybe you want to try a different preamp section, or power amp section or vice-versa...

I’ve been wanting to mess with switching between the preamps of two different amps running into the same power amp and speaker (effectively making a multi-channel amp), but my understanding is that for a tube amp, you’d still need the amp whose power amp/speaker is not being used to run into some kind of speaker or load box or something, and I’ve been afraid my lack of understanding of the technical nuances of the process would result in me blowing something up.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

My emergency/practice mini board is built for this; Mooer Solo up front for dirt, and Mooer DI/Cab sim as last pedal. Sounds great.

There are definitely a ton of pre-amp pedals these days though. I have done this on a few occassions with various standard dirt boxes and it has been hit/miss. Mostly miss.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

Mooer's preamp pedals sound great though, I recommend checking one of those out, lots of flavors.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

Running an EQ pedal just after the distortion pedal in this direct-into-the-power-amp adds a lot of tone sculpting capability.

And of course, you can also run a overdrive pedal just before that distortion pedal to tighten it up -just like so many peope do when they send into the preamp.

My preferred distortion tone is achieved by running a distortion followed by an EQ pedal directly into the power amp.

Re: Pedal as preamp?

I'm pretty sure the Palladium was designed with this in mind.

Yup, that is what it is designed for. Just a Palladium and some sort of power amp is all you need. It could be a power amp in a combo or something like a PowerStage 170- it doesn't matter.

Unless you need a clean tone... But, yes, the Palladium's high gain tones sound great!

Re: Pedal as preamp?

This is where my pre-amp chub is lately...

it won all kinds of awards this year for whatever that's worth
